U.S. Entrepreneurial Activity Drops for Second Straight Year

'Necessity entrepreneurship' isn't a phenomenon that occurs only in emerging economies and countries reeling from natural disasters like the Philippines -- it happens here in the U.S. as well. And as the overall health of the economy improves, the number of individuals engaged in entrepreneurial activity as a way to 'make ends meet' continues to drop. This shift away from being self-employed contributed to a drop in business creation rates for a second straight year.

Media attention was on Rwanda last week as the country commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 1994 genocide. While the tragedy of human loss amounting to 800,000 people in just 100 days will never be forgotten, entrepreneurs are offering hope for a better future.

Measuring the Impact of Entrepreneurship Education

Entrepreneurship education and training programs have rapidly proliferated in recent years. However, impact evaluation to determine what really works versus what doesn't in preparing the next wave of entrepreneurs has not kept pace. A couple of organizations have set out to address such challenge of increased investment in educational entrepreneurship programs without corresponding research or evidence to support decisions, including the Global Entrepreneurship Research Network (GERN), a collaboration of research organizations around the world.

Landrieu Moves On, Cantwell Moves In

Entrepreneurship Data Analysis in 2013
In my final post of 2013, I summarize my top of mind developments in the world’s entrepreneurship data chest. Next year will herald a new era in evidence-based programming and policymaking as practitioners and policymakers alike—now committed to new firm formation—demand better data and analysis around what entrepreneurship promotion efforts are working and what is hype.
