Financial History... the Backstory Behind All History

Mark Marich on July 06, 2009 Source: Policy Dialogue on Entrepreneurship

A new PBS series, sponsored in part by the Kauffman Foundation, called "The Ascent of Money" promises to take viewers on a journey chronicling the role of money in human progress in a new light. An initial two-hour version of the documentary, which aired last January, focused on the current economic crisis, while the new series will trace the story of money and finance from Mesopotamian moneylenders to hedge fund managers on Wall Street.

The content is based on the best-selling book “The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World” written in anticipation of the current economic crisis by Harvard economist and historian Niall Ferguson. The author will trace the evolution of money and the global financial system over the course of four hour-long segments (to be aired July 8, 15, 22 and 29; check local listings).
