The U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Economic Development Administration held a forum on June 29th on the topic of innovation. The forum took place at the University of Massachusetts in Boston and featured David Kappos, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as Patrick Gallagher, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Ginger Lew, Senior Counselor of the National Economic Council and Jack Wilson, President of the University of Massachusetts.

In announcing the series several weeks ago, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke espoused support for university-driven innovation.  He stated, “We are committed to working with university leaders to increase the economic impact of our nation’s investment in research and development to help drive economic growth and job creation.”

There are three more upcoming forums throughout the US. Each will feature university leaders and key stakeholders who will discuss the roles universities play inthe fields of innovation, economic development, job creation and commercialization of federally funded research. Secretary Locke is scheduled to speak at the July 13th forum in Ann Arbor and the July 15th forum in Atlanta. He hosted a similarly themed forum in Washington, D.C. this past February on "Catalyzing University Research for a Stronger Economy."

Participants of each forumin the series will have a chance to discuss how to raise the capital needed to move an idea from the research stage to the commercial market, the role of universities inthe commercialization process and economic development, and the need for more entrepreneurial education.

The dates of each forum areas follows:

  • July 8th (Los Angeles)
  • July 13th (Ann Arbor)
