Measuring the Impact of Entrepreneurship Education

Entrepreneurship education and training programs have rapidly proliferated in recent years. However, impact evaluation to determine what really works versus what doesn't in preparing the next wave of entrepreneurs has not kept pace. A couple of organizations have set out to address such challenge of increased investment in educational entrepreneurship programs without corresponding research or evidence to support decisions, including the Global Entrepreneurship Research Network (GERN), a collaboration of research organizations around the world.

New Policy Digest Makes Case for Startup Visa

The first in a new series of policy digests from the Kauffman Foundation highlights strategies for how a 'startup visa would allow immigrants to start businesses in the U.S. after satisfying certain funding, employment and other requirements. The Economic Case for Welcoming Immigrant Entrepreneurs features an analysis of possible economic contributions of one proposal currently before Congress and goes on to offer the following research-based strategies to maximize the benefits of any startup visa:

This Week in Entrepreneurship Policy

There are a couple of congressional hearings this week focused on the central nervous system of countless startups and corporations alike -- the internet. The House Energy & Commerce Committee sets its sights on a lofty goal with a hearing entitled "Ensuring the Security, Stability, Resilience and Freedom of the Global Internet." Meanwhile, the House Judiciary Committee asks if the Commerce Department is the best overseer of ICANN, a nonprofit that manages the global domain system. Other topics covered include: a look at the current employment situation from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the benefits and risks of bitcoin, the SBA budget, intellectual property, empowering women as a strategy for economic growth, protecting personal data and more.

The Steady Rise of Women Entrepreneurs
While the war of words continues about women cracking the boys' club of Silicon Valley, female entrepreneurs are starting 1,288 new businesses each day -- double the rate from only three years ago. The 2014 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report commissioned by American Express OPEN, estimates more than 9.1 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. (compared to 8.6 million in 2013) that generate more than $1.4 trillion in revenues and employ 7.9 million people.

Angels On the Upswing Still Targeting Tech

Despite reason for concern with the Q3 2013 numbers on angel investing, the total figures for 2013 as a whole show that angel activity is on the rise with more high-valuation deals closed in 2013 than the previous year.
