Just a couple months ago, I'll bet 95 percent of the U.S. population hadn't even heard of the Internet of Things. All that's changed as the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes the next high-tech household term. If it hasn't yet entered your household, I found the best (and least jargon-y)definition from Cisco: It's "the network of physical objects accessed through the Internet, as defined by technology analysts and visionaries. These objects contain embedded technology to interact with internal states or the external environment. In other words, when objects can sense and communicate, it changes how and where decisions are made, and who makes them."

When you hear the term "genome," it might take you back to your high school biology class, where your teacher talked about the many zillions of pieces of data that are contained in DNA. You can think of a Startup Genome a bit the same way.

Where the Big Data Comes From

Last month, the Kauffman Foundation announced a grant aimed at curating data on young companies from cities around the world. Our partner in this endeavor is Startup Genome; a free and open platform for collecting, curating and analyzing data about the startups, entrepreneurs, investors and community enablers in a local startup community.

Mapping Communities One Startup At A Time

At the Kauffman Foundation, we recently announced a grant to a group that is trying to map and track where startups are around the world. The project--Startup Genome--is working "to build the most complete and accurate database of the world's startup communities, present it in useful, beautiful ways and provide tools and reports that community builders can use to gain insight into what's happening in their community. And make better decisions about how to grow it."
