From Vannevar Bush in 1945 to Marc Andreessen in 1993, the web's visionaries have imagined it to be read/write by design. Till now, it's been just a dream. Learn how a new W3 standard called Open Annotation promises to change that, and with it everything about how we explore, connect, share and assess human knowledge.

Dan Whaley is the founder of, a new non-profit to enable the community moderated annotation of the world's knowledge. Previously he built the first world's first online travel reservation system-- which today, under SABRE, still handles over $9B in travel a year.
