Understanding OSHA Respirable Silica Webinar By MentorHealth
Overview: Respirable Silica has been an occupational health issue for many decades; however, the topic has gained in interest following the publication of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration's (OSHA) new proposed rule which would comprehensively regulate workplaces where respirable silica is present.
If/when finalized, this rule would impose a significantly lower exposure limit (PEL) as well as other new requirements such as monitoring, medical surveillance, recordkeeping, training, and others. According to health organizations, over-exposure to respirable silica may lead to diseases such as silicosis and increased risk of lung cancer. Silica is an extraordinarily common substance as it is, basically, sand. Occupational exposures are common in the construction (masonry and concrete, roadways, others), oil & gas (fracking), petrochemical, and foundry industries - to name a few.
This webinar is intended to provide an overview of the respirable silica, awareness of the requirements for OSHA compliance, and some tips on addressing the problem in the workplace.
Why should you attend: OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) is focused on enforcing existing safety and health requirements related to Respirable Silica exposures and are working on a new comprehensive rule. This enforcement and rule will impose many new requirements that will significantly impact the following industries: oil & gas, fracking, petrochemical, construction, manufacturing, maritime and many others. The rule could significantly reduce the permissible exposure limit (PEL) for silica as well as impose new requirements for monitoring, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, training, recordkeeping, and liability.
Areas Covered in the Session:
Learn what respirable silica is and where / how it is commonly used
Understand why OSHA considers respirable silica to be a health hazard
Awareness of OSHA's enforcement program targeting worksites where silica is used
