With the ‘digital revolution’ in full swing and technological innovation advancing daily, the creative industries are expanding. However, the policies that guide the creative economy are too often outdated and based on business models that have been virtually swept away. Nesta, a UK-based foundation focused on innovation, has come up with a set of policy recommendations to guide the UK—and possibly serve as at least a discussion starter for other countries.
I first visited the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology in Ghana when it first opened in 2008. It was impressive then and it has continued to impress since—helping incubate promising tech startups throughout the country. Five years later, it is part of a growing entrepreneurial ecosystem in Accra that is laying the foundation for future growth. In our final commentary on Africa, we hear from Alicia Robb, senior fellow at the Kauffman Foundation, who has just returned from Ghana about her thoughts on the progress being made.

That is the primary message from a former VC in a new article in the Harvard Business Review. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to regular PDE followers, but there are a number of common misconceptions about the scope, performance and success rate of venture capital for startups.
Several hearings on policies that impact entrepreneurial growth are scheduled for the week ahead with the biggest being the Senate Judiciary Committee’s look at potential immigration reform through The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, S.744. Appearing earlier today were representatives from a range of entities including Microsoft, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Center for Immigration Studies. On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano appears before the committee during a hearing of the same title. Other topics covered in hearings throughout the week include: next-generation computing and “big data analytics”, the SBA budget, STEM workforce, small business lending, the state of wireless communications and more.
