5 ideas to think about before starting to fundraise

Panelists at Great Lakes Venture Fair in Cleveland doled out some tips for budding entrepreneurs getting ready to do their first round of fundraising. On the panel were Jon Snyder, president and CEO of Cleveland neurostimulation company Neuros Medical; Kevin Mendelsohn, vice president of finance and corporate development for CardioInsight Technologies; Art Fritts, president and CEO of nanotechnology company NanoSperse; and Lisa Novelli, president and CEO of National Composite Center. Here's a quick rundown of what they suggested entrepreneurs think about before they raise any money.

UBI analyzes top university incubators

The team behind the University Business Incubator Index set out to find the top university incubators in the world, discover what makes them successful, and learn where others are falling short. Over the past year, they collected data on 150 university incubators in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia. They interviewed incubator managers, entrepreneurs and investors, and came up with about 60 independent indicators of success. Then they scored each incubator, adjusting scores for those in the most favorable and unfavorable locations.

Reducing Costs and Accelerating Innovation in Biotech Startups

Operating a biotech startup has presented increased difficulty and risk to entrepreneurs over the past decade. The costs of development for biotech startups have grown so much as to become a barrier to entry. Up-front capital costs for equipment now range from $200,000 for a scanning electron microscope to $740,000 for an Illumina next-generation sequencing platform (Wall Street Journal, 2012). It is in turn quite cost-prohibitive to establish in-house research platforms on basic startup funding.
