What is emotionally-healthy technology?

on June 16, 2014

As part of the Kauffman-sponsored Energizing Health Collaboration Series, we've turned over eMed to Guest Editor Matt Keener, the chief architect for the Pittsburgh leg of the collaboration conference and a translational clinical neuroscientist. What is emotionally-healthy technology?

Emotionally-healthy technology refers to technology that interacts with a user in a way that can improve emotional wellbeing.

For instance, emotionally-healthy technology respects our internal clocks. A technology that automatically suggests a computer turn off at 11 p.m. helps keep the user more in tune with his sleep cycles and therefore lower the risk for emotional distress.
