Utah Most ‘Friendly’ State for Small Business

How friendly is your state to small business owners? Apparently very friendly, if you live in Utah or Texas—and not so friendly if you live in California. Utah took the top honors as the friendliest state to small business while Texas had three of the top five cities in the latest survey from Thumbtack.com and the Kauffman Foundation.

This Week in Entrepreneurship Policy

With both houses returning to Washington this week from recess, there are a number of hearings scheduled of interest to those interested in the policies that promote entrepreneurship. President Obama’s FY 2014 budget proposal gets a look in the Senate from the Budget and Finance committees. Other topics include: STEM education, the US position on internet governance, JOBS Act update, small business tax reform, regulatory reform and the state of communications in rural communities.

At Last, a Global Platform for Startups

The nurturing of new and young firms has so far not been given much attention in prominent global gatherings. International government meetings have mostly concentrated on passive SME policy and others like the World Economic Forum have treated entrepreneurs as a side ring at the circus. The maturing of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) to fill this gap is thus a welcome development.

Start-Up Chile: In Search of the Next 100 Global Startups

Since its inception, Start-Up Chile has received a considerable amount of attention for its search for bootstrappers who receive equity-free seed capital of $40,000 and a 1-year work visa in the South American country. Recently it announced the opening of its seventh round of applications—looking to select, fund, and host up to 100 startups while giving them access to a global network for those determined to make their projects global.

GEC Commits to Startup Policy Platform

Last Friday, the Global Entrepreneurship Congress adjourned in Rio de Janeiro, ending a week of intense sessions that engaged over two thousand people from 130 countries in discussions around building stronger entrepreneurship ecosystems back home. While the Congress included Global Entrepreneurship Week host country delegations, investors and entrepreneurs, it opened last Monday with a new session for policymakers and researchers. The experiment was a success and ended with a commitment by organizers to make government policy a mainstay of the annual Congress in the future.
