Financing Growth: Helping More Americans Help Entrepreneurs

In his State of the Union Address next week, President Obama will shift gears back to job creation after his inauguration speech focused on wider themes. As the debate about how the government can help the economy regain its pre-recession strength enters a new phase, the Kauffman Foundation’s annual “State of Entrepreneurship Address” last week in Washington, DC, focused on how financial constraints have been blocking the success of new and young firms that create most of the net new jobs.

The JOBS Act: How Business Should Get Done in Washington, DC

The JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act is one small step away from becoming law after its fast passage in Congress and President Obama has given reassurance that he will sign the bill when it gets to his desk this week (probably Thursday). The passage of the JOBS Act last Tuesday during a politically charged time is proof that entrepreneurship promotion is a bipartisan issue. As the clock moves relentlessly toward November, both sides of the aisle found common focus and set out to solve the entrepreneurial access to capital problem. The American public should be proud of how functional Washington was these past few weeks.

JOBS Act Set to Sail Through

While the Senate approved the JOBS Act late last week, it attached an amendment that requires House approval before the legislation makes it to President Obama to be signed into law. However, the amendment—which increases investor protections in crowdfunding—is not enough to derail the hugely popular legislation which is expected to sail through the House easily this week.
