Small Businesses’ Views on Health Care

Posted by: Mark Marich on December 04, 2009 Source: Policy Dialogue on Entrepreneurship

A Dallas Morning News article recently argued that in Texas, where fewer than 50 percent of private-sector employers offer health insurance, some small firms say they would be more competitive if they dropped coverage and paid the fine that is stipulated in the House bill. In other words, the fee would cost less than paying premiums.

Supporters point out that several measures included in the House and Senate bills would actually help small businesses. For example, the insurance exchange would make it easier for small businesses to shop for coverage.

We hope policymakers will be sensitive to the impact of reform proposals on not only small businesses, but on new firms as well. For more discussion on health care and the nation’s most important job creators, click here.

As a small business owner that already provides heath insurance for our employees, these reform proposals are another huge discouragement all around. What government interference with issues unrelated to the actual conduct of business has ever not increased over time?
