The Administration could take a huge step towards breaking gridlock on many economic, oil, environmental and security issues by simply asking the US automakers to mass produce affordable bi-fuel natural gas pick-ups, SUVs, vans and trucks. This would stimulate construction of CNG and LNG fuel stations that could serve 85% of all vehicles in the Nation, both fleets and the general public, because consumers could CHOOSE to save money on motor fuels. The price of natural gas is now $2.20/gge less than oil; yet OEMs, save for a few thousand Honda Civics, do NOT offer NG options on their full-size vehicles. THIS IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF MARKET FAILURE. There are no technical barriers to doing this immediately; only custom, culture, ignorance and a well-funded OLIGOPOLY.
