StartUP America!

February promises to be a busy month in Washington for entrepreneurship policy. Next Tuesday February 8th will see Kauffman’s annual State of Entrepreneurship Address delivered by Carl Schramm followed by Capitol Hill briefings and a host of interesting activity on job creation. Today, I post from an event at the White House where President Obama has just announced a “StartUP America Partnership,” a new initiative aimed at fostering successful innovative, high growth businesses in the U.S. It marks a commitment of the current administration to a national entrepreneurship-based strategy to stimulate economic growth and the creation of quality jobs.

State of Entrepreneurship Address & The Rules for Growth

Note: Next week, PDE-news will be distributed on Tuesday, February 8, following the Kauffman Foundation’s ‘State of Entrepreneurship Address.’ (see the post below for details)

Following President Obama's increased focus on regulatory reform and his call for innovation and entrepreneurship in his recent State of the Union address, the Kauffman Foundation will present its second annual State of Entrepreneurship Address on February 8, 2011, to shed light on how changes to specific laws and regulations can accelerate economic growth without adding to the deficit.

Colombia’s “Bulletproof” Entrepreneurs

Colombia is the fifth-largest economy in Latin America in terms of GDP. The country boasts one of the best coffees in the world, rich natural resources, abundant gold and emerald production, and a relatively educated populace. And despite its international reputation for drug cartels and violence, the latest Doing Business 2011 ranking suggests things could be improving. Colombia is ranked number 39 among 183 countries in terms of the ease of doing business.

Kauffman Labs Tabs 25 Aspiring Founders in Education Market

Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation announced the selection of its inaugural class of the Education Ventures Program, which will immerse 25 aspiring entrepreneurs in an intensive, hands-on program designed to catalyze the creation of high-growth companies in the education sector. The selected entrepreneurs will go through four months of comprehensive, individualized training and education in preparing to bring their ideas to market, including how to: validate their market; perform effective customer development; understand funding options; build a team; develop sales and presentation skills; and, plan for scale.

This Week in Entrepreneurship Policy (Jan. 24)

A number of hearings are scheduled for the week ahead in both houses of Congress, including one for the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship that examines efforts to encourage entrepreneurship in disadvantaged, rural and traditionally under-served areas.

VC Funds Continue to Dry Up

According to a report earlier this week by the National Venture Capital Association, 2010 saw venture capital fundraising drop for the fourth consecutive year. During that time, the number of funds has shrunk from 235 to 157 while funds raised have dropped more than 61% (from $31.9 billion to $12.3 billion).
