Entrepreneurs Need R&R, too!

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on August 05, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

As we move into August, and inch ever-closer to Labor Day – the unofficial end of summer – I’ve been thinking a lot about squeezing the most out of the last few weeks of the beautiful summertime weather.  July 4th is a fading memory, and before you know it, Autumn and the “Back-to-School” mentality will take over and then we’ll enter the mad-dash through Black Friday to the Winter Holidays.  But for now, let’s stay a few more moments in Summer Vacation mode.

To borrow the thought from 80’s hair-metal band, Poison:

“I’m always workin’, slavin’ every day,
Gotta get away from that ‘same old, same old;’
I need a chance just to get away,
If you could hear me think this is what I’d say:

Don’t need nothin’ but a good time,
How can I resist?
Ain’t lookin’ for nothin’ but a good time,
And it don’t get better than this…”

Summer’s traditionally thought of as a time to take a little time off work or school, get things done around the house or do some traveling – just ask Clark Griswold.  But it’s not always that simple for entrepreneurs to leave behind their work-related responsibilities for a little fun in the sun – especially with the effects of the recession still in full swing. The current economic climate has meant that many of us aren’t even entertaining the idea of a little R & R this summer.

As an entrepreneur, it’s often difficult to take that time for yourself or your family because, too often, time spent not working is time spent not earning.  When you’re the boss, there’s rarely any PTO.  An article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal explores the topic in a little greater detail and interviews a few entrepreneurs about how the recession has changed (or eliminated) their summer travel plans.

It’s been more than 20 years (!) since Nothin’ But a Good Time,” was a hit for Bret Michaels, C.C. DeVille and the boys, but the sentiment remains true:  sometimes you just need a day-off, a weekend getaway or even a full-blown vacation.  While some of the fashion choices in the video I’ve linked may be questionable (at best), the idea of taking a little time to decompress, reenergize and refocus is one that never goes out of style.

What are your plans for relaxation (if any) this summer?  Have you found it difficult to sneak away from the office – and “unplug” from the emails, phone calls, etc. – this summer?

In closing, one more verse from Poison’s ode to relaxation – from me, to all the entrepreneurs workin’ hard out there:

“I raise a toast to all of us,
Who are breakin’ our backs every day;
If wantin’ the good life is such a crime,
Lord, then put me away…”

Entrepreneur should also know how to relax. Though it is good to run a business in that season because people would surely be out on vacation, have hang-outs to some beautiful spots, etc. However, It is much better to unwind ourselves at times. We need that.. :)

I had not even noticed the summer had started before it was over last year. I feel that there might be an inverse SAD ( Seasonal Effective Disorder ) for entrepreneur's. Being stuck in a office when everyone else is poolside is one of the most difficult things. Ovbiously this does not occur in the winter making it a little more passable.

I think your point "time spent not working is time spent not earning" is one that weighs heavily on the entrepreneur. Salaried employees are a few steps removed from the actual profit and are often on cog in a larger machine. The entrepreneur often is a larger part of the whole business machine and his / her absence can have a detrimental impact on profit generation.

Notwithstanding this all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy so this has to be part of the business plan ... how can the business operate profitably when the owner is away.

Even an Entrepreneur needs to be able to take time off just to get away and refresh or to spend time with your family, which is one thing you will regret later in life if you don't leave out time for.

Work is a necessity for the head of the family. but on the other hand have to deal with the family to be harmonious family. The division of time between working hard with the family should be balanced.

Hard working is good. But we should take a break to recharge battery. I think that you will get a lot of new ideas about your business after a good break. So I would say that hard working is good but elaxation is better because it will make your hard working more fruitful.

It can be extremely difficult to step back and take a vacation when you're an entrepreneur! I fully agree with Thom and a commentor's post that "time not working is money not earned." Even when setting up the right systems and people to take more control of daily activities, the life of an entrepreneur is almost always in high-gear.

We have a new policy requiring all vacation time be used every year. In the past, employees have saved their PTO and never used it. We think it is vital to use these days for employee mental health and well being.

When I finally made the plunge into self-employment, learning to relax was the hardest thing I had to accomplish. It may seem like a ridiculous thing to say, but I think others in this situation can relate. I went from expecting my 2-4 weeks per year to never being able to afford those days. Sure, I could afford them financially, but I could never feel at peace with myself enough to relax. There was always something standing in the way. My business benefitted from it when I was eventually able to clear that hump.

Working hard when you start and put some inspiration into it. When your stat settle then must take a vacation. This will boost your work more than always sitting on the share.
