Entrepreneurship News Round-Up: Week of 8/10/2009

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on August 10, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

Alibaba.com has kicked-off a new marketing campaign that includes TV, print and online media and targets entrepreneurs. There’s a new version of its U.S. microsite and three video "mock-umentaries" to greet visitors to the site with entertaining stories of how entrepreneurs used Alibaba.com to find suppliers and manufacturers to help them launch their businesses. The TV ads are currently running on CNBC and ABC, with other ads appearing in Inc., Fast Company, Women's Wear Daily and on Purchasing.com.

The New York Daily News has an interview with Manhattan-based business baroness Barbara Corcoran, one of the judges on ABC’s new reality TV show “Shark Tank.” On the show, wannabe entrepreneurs get the chance to pitch their ideas and secure funding to kick-start a business. Corcoran is an entrepreneur herself, having turned a $1,000 loan into a $5 billion real estate company.

A new program named “Top Gun” takes aim at entrepreneurs in Maine. Steve Bazinet, President of the Maine Center for Enterprise Development in Portland, is looking for “next generation business leaders,” the innovative entrepreneurs who can see their ideas and companies generating millions in revenues. Enrollees get a personal mentor, access to lawyers, accountants and industry professionals and 12 weeks of homework that culminate in a pitch before investors.

These are some foward-looking events for the entrepreneurial education many need. Whether it be about accounting, finance, Home Mortgages, or percentage of return requirements, I see this a a good development.

There sure have been a number of shows about entrepreneurs pitching their ideas for start-up money, but it would be nice to see how process works for actual production, marketing, pricing and distribution. I know this is not exactly a rivoting TV idea for the masses, but on a niche channel, I think it would be a hit.

With Alibaba's recent foray into mainstream advertising i feel there will be many people out there with a sinking feeling in the pit of their stomach. There are a lot of new online business whos model seems to be Alibaba + Good Website + Seo = Profit. Dont get me wrong i am not saying that this is a bad model however as these adverts show the barriers to entry are falling faster than some might expect.

Alibaba is the global leader in B2B market. It helps both the buyers and suppliers to do online marketing smoothly. Business management software solutions is also offered by Alibab.com in order to serve the small business group in China. The new marketing strategy of Alibaba targeting entrepreneurs looks good and all the best for their future.

hi,
The etymology of "business" relates to the state of being busy either as an individual or society as a whole, doing commercially viable and profitable work.

The one upside to a recession is that the price for overall services is lowered; basically as supply of people rendering services outweighs the demand.

So for some entrepreneurs, they are able to get legal advice, web designers, writers, etc., at a better price. So maybe you need a website for your new startup, the recession has millions (hyperbole) of web designers willing to do the site for less than half of what they would have charged in a stable economy.

Apart from the challenge of getting the initial start-up amount for setting up a business, it is also important to get to know where you can get resources for cheap and whether the dealers are trustworthy. With Alibaba.com, a major portion of the worries are over.

Top Gun's idea is just excellent. Talented entrepreneurs in Maine are matched with mentors who guide and help them to develop businesses.
