Entrepreneurship News Round-Up: Week of 8/24/2009

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on August 24, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

For the final full  week of August, we’ve got a few EXTRA links to share with you:

An article by Mickey Meece in the Business Section of this weekend’s New York Times cites some recent Kauffman reports and delves into the continuing rise of “necessity entrepreneurship.”

CurrentMom.com expands on a recent interview with Amy Adams, Meryl Streep and Nora Ephron in Ladies Home Journal – in which the women discuss their new movie, Julie & Julia, and the “vital support and a nagging distraction” that marriage can be for entrepreneurs.

Ethan Lyon, Senior Writer at Sparxoo.com, lists his “Top 5: You Might Be an Entrepreneur if…” qualities, and references another recent New York Times article.  Money quote from the piece: “In times of economic distress, it’s small business and entrepreneurs who lead the way out of these recessionary periods,” said Jeff Kaczmarek, President of the Economic Development Corporation.

Profiling three young, collegiate entrepreneurs, Jordan Valinsky at CNN.com tells us why “The Dorm is the New Garage.”  Included is a great quote from Christopher Hanks, Director of the entrepreneurship program at the University of Georgia: "There is no better time to start a business… during a depression or recession, innovation always increases."

As part of her article, “Entrepreneurs, Don’t Go It Alone… Especially Now,” Rhonda Abrams of USA Today explains her observation on successful entrepreneurs: “successful people seek out good advice and listen to it.”

Agreed. Tough environments force us out of our comfort zones to think in ways that are innovative and efficient. It inadvertently levels the playing field and allows doors to open from those looking for fresh ideas and positive energy. It is the entreprenuer's calling to respond.

This is very true there is no better time to start a business… during a depression or recession, innovation always increases and successful people seek out good advice and listen to it.

Useful round up of interesting articles. The 'Top 5: You Might Be an Entrepreneur If…' article was particularly relevant to me right now - I can't resist a 'top 5' style post about almost anything! Of the 5 listed I think the 5th ('You want ownership') is quite telling. I'm not sure this necessarily dictates that you CAN be an entrepreneur but to me it certainly identifies those most likely to benefit by becoming one. Some people are happy to work their whole life under someone else's control, making the shareholders money, others just aren't. It's taking that desire forward that is more difficult!

Thanks for the links to some very useful articles. I thinke the USA today article in particular should be read by anyone just starting out - there is plenty of help out there so becoming an entrepreneur shouldn't be a lonely endeavor.

After reading those posts, and the latest from Stuart Ellman of New York venture firm RRE Partners, you’d think the venture community is one big, happy family. Ellman, after seeing his name on our list of venture capitalists who “aren’t jerks,” reflects on the importance of respect in the industry.

Is there longitudinal data that tracks whether recession entrepreneurs stick with it as long as people who start businesses in better times? Or, do they continue to search for work, and close the business as soon as they land a job?
