Starting a Business – Cheaper Than You Think

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on August 11, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

For many, the biggest problem with getting a good business idea off the ground is the cost. From administrative and legal costs, to product development and marketing, office space and employees, starting a business can be incredibly expensive. However, with the right set of resources, many of these costs can be pinched down without risking your venture. Of course, sometimes quality trumps price, but there are a few gems below that might just meet your start-up's needs without busting the bank. And if you know of some others not on this list - let me know! That is what the comment button is for.

Thom,
Awesome list that I plan on sharing with my networks. I did note that absent from the Financial Services section was the free real estate information resource, BiggerPockets.com, offering community advice on real estate investments, purchases, etc.

(Disclaimer - I am the site's founder and am clearly biased!)

Great list. I'd be curious to know if anyone has had luck w/ the free Press Release sites. Did they generate phone inquiries or did they cause a spike in website traffic?

Starting a business might be cheap from a start-up money point of view...but the time and effort is not factored in and should be considered part of the start-up costs.

You're right. Many still believe that to build a business you need more capital. But I know many examples of companies and successful businesses, especially on the Internet that began with no financial investment, only with hard work and dedication and that worked and is now a large and growing business.
Congratulations for the article!

Great article that clearly demonstrates that there's quality information out there to help you start up in business.

If you need to raise money from a bank or other investor you will probably need to present your business plan.

This might be daunting if you've never done it before but again there's a lot of good free tips on presenting a business pitch out there if you look in the right place.

The Center for Media Research has released a study by Vertical Response that shows just where many of these ‘Main Street’ players are going with their online dollars. The big winners: e-mail and social media. With only 3.8% of small business folks NOT planning on using e-mail marketing and with social media carrying the perception of being free (which they so rudely discover it is far from free) this should make some in the banner and search crowd a little wary.

I wasn’t rich when I started consulting.) In fact, a recent study shows that 17 percent of new business startups launch without any funds whatsoever. However, the Freelance UK article that reports on the study points out that being able to manage cash flow (or the lack of it) is crucial to the success of a business. As I’ve noted before, cash flow is one of the reasons why businesses fail.

Actually starting an LLC or an S corporation was a lot cheaper than I thought. And it protects me from all of the liability. It came out to be like $160 for an LLC in my state!

Absolutely true. From my own experiences, it goes like this - the most important things are, after you know what you want to do:
1) knowledge and constant learning
2) business connections
3) investment funds

Don't be afraid to start your business and dreams, if you have low budget. There is always the way. Just be innovative, creative and believe in yourself.

The beauty of the internet is it makes running an online business almost free, or at least definitely much cheaper than ever before possible. Even marketing is much easier and cheaper. The problem of this is that now anyone can do it, and for the same price, so there is much more competition.

Vistaprint will give you a few "free" business cards, but you will pay shipping and handling.

A better resource that I have found for top quality printing at rock bottom prices is http://www.GreatCheapPrinting.com

Examples of their prices -- 1000 business cards for $14, full color on both sides with high gloss finish.

1000 brochures for $125, 5000 for $254 -- also superb quality.

I get all my printing there. Actually cheaper than Vistaprint, with equal or better quality.

Hi there,

Fantastic list and useful topic, however I'd like to contribute with two tools that I think are absolutely necessary for startsups:
1.) Google Adwords Keyword Tool https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Why? Shows online search demand for keywords, very useful for forecasting

2.) Google Analytics
http://www.google.com/analytics
Measures digital marketing effectiveness

Thank you for this wonderful list,
