Talking about BusinessWeek's "The Case for Optimism"

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on August 27, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

Taking a look at the newsstand lately, it may seem as if the covers of major periodicals are not - pardon the pun - on the same page.  Only a week or two after Newsweek proclaimed "The Recession is Over," BusinessWeek has followed with "The Case for Optimism."  Similar sure, but whereas Newsweek certainly IS being optimistic, I think BusinessWeek has a great point for entrepreneurs: "Sure, it has been a harrowing storm. And now is no time to discount the dangers that still exist. But opening your mind to optimism can help you seize the opportunities ahead."

While it can be tempting (and perhaps safer) to hang back and wait out the recession before making any big business plans, BusinessWeek's Peter Coy argues that now is the perfect time to forge ahead. "Practical people should open their minds to the opportunities to be seized just as much as to the dangers to be dodged," he writes.  The online version even has a short slideshow detailing the signs of life for business owners.

In setting the stage for his "Case for Optimism," Coy brings up the following problems:

  • The loss of (just) a quarter-million jobs in July was greeted as good news.
  • Long-term unemployment and foreclosures continue to mount.
  • This is the worst economic downturn since the 1930s.
  • Health-care costs are out of control and an aging population around the globe is driving government spending through the roof.
  • Scientists say we need an expensive crash program to fight global warming or we'll incinerate ourselves.

With stuff like this going on every day, every WHERE, perhaps it's easy to side with the 53% of Americans from a recent Gallup poll that think the U.S. economic outlook is getting WORSE.

Things are always darkest before the dawn, and the two points Coy brings up for cautious optimism support that thinking:

1.) "Recessions such as this one... set the stage for future growth. As economist Joseph A. Schumpeter wrote in 1942, "creative destruction" shakes loose people from old, dying businesses and forces them to figure out new ways to be useful."  Green-collar jobs, anyone?

2.) "Ingenuity is addictive. Equipping one or two billion more of the world's people with higher education and better technology... has increased humanity's ability to solve hard problems. The next world-changing breakthrough may come from China, or India, or Eastern Europe."

And it's in that spirit that I'll be operating for the next few months - as I encourage you to do as well, if possible - as we lead up to Global Entrepreneurship Week.  I blogged this past summer about getting to see first-hand entrepreneurship taking place in Morocco, and this fall is certain to be an exciting time in the entrepreneurship arena as well. In the months and weeks since then, I've seen it from those in the Mediterranean, Middle East, and all around the world.

The recession's been tough, sure, even grueling at times.  It's lasted longer and hit harder than many thought it would.  But entrepreneurs have been doing their part - and we've been chronicling it here, every week - so I'm optimistic that the second half of the equation - E=R: Entrepreneurs = Recovery - will follow in time.

You really just can't any credence in these types of news reports- newscasters are simply reporting the trend of the day and have no real evidence backing up their claim for optimism or pessimissism- we should really view these types of articles as op-eds.

The recession isn't that great for me,but I see it as an opportunity to batten down the hatches and reasses my business.

There will be quite a few competitors who go out of business so when we come out of the otherside there will be less competition to worry about.

I'd much rather be a "glass half full" person, some of the people I know are more "that's not my glass"!

With hindsight and the fact that it's now January 2010 and we are finally coming out of recession, you tend to feel that Business Week was probably on the right track after all with the facts that it presented.

I would have to add that the economy seems to be improving as the holiday shopping quarter report was better than forecast, which to me would indicate that people are working again.

The current level of confidence continues to be mostly associated with overall performance of the markets. With people seeing continued signs of economic growth and stability (with approx 70% stating they feel the US economy will either hold steady or improve compared to 60% just a few months ago), there is a strong sense of optimism heading into 2010. When the market goes down we will have the doomsayers come out again just like 2 years ago..

This is absolutely the best time for anyone who has been thinking of starting up their own business or becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Why is that so? As the article above quoted "Practical people should open their minds to the opportunities to be seized just as much as to the dangers to be dodged," Now is a good time to take a ride together with the economic recovery and you start from the bottom-up, not the opposite.

I agree. There are many opportunities in this economy. You just have to look for them. They may not look like they did in the past. You generally get what you look for, focus on teh good and more "good" will show up.

"BusinessWeek's Peter Coy argues that now is the perfect time to forge ahead" - I agreed with his statement. With the preceived notion that the situation is improving, there will be more opportunities floating around. And when the economy really bounced back strongly, you will be riding on the top of the wave! Seize the day!

I personally don't feel the recession is over here in the UK but things are starting to get better for sure. Job losses in the tens of thousands wasn't nice, has this happened to me. I lost my job back in September, and was forced into either take a lower paid job or become an entrepreneur (hopefully) and i took the self employed route.. things are going well i suppose. The housing market is starting to pick up again and people are spending again. :)

I think the condition is getting better and on the right track. It's important to stay positive in any circumstances though it's hard to do. From failure, we learn from our past mistakes and ensure never repeat the same mistakes again. So, next time we can pursue our goal easier without too many obstacles.

It is very hard to know when a recession has started and when one has finished. The only thing you can plan upon is that the actual state of the economy is the same for your competitors. As such it is the responsibility of management teams to continue to think how best to grow the business and protect its assets.

Some of the most successful organisations view recessions as opportunities. Watch your cash flow, build reserves and wait for the bad times as the weak will fall by the wayside and create opportunities for you.

The key is where to draw the line though. When must you seize opportunities and when must be wary of the dangers that lurk in a business environment? Isn't this a subjective test at the end of the day?

The recession has not receded in my opinion, hundreds of thousands of people are still without work. Those that have taken work have done so more out of necessity. New emergence with small business has erupted as people look desperately to support their homes and families and try to distance themselves from the corporate world that put thim in this place to begin with.

It is strange that what passes for optimism right now would have been blatant pessimism several years ago. I guess it’s just a sign of the time, and it is progress. At this point, any progress is good progress. For the “small guy” who lost quite a bit in these past years, it’s still difficult to embrace optimism in order to seize the opportunities that lay ahead. However, the wisdom of that advice is clear.
