Entrepreneurs are... lazy?

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on July 10, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

I’ve seen it argued that “laziness” is one of the most essential traits of some successful entrepreneurs because it leads them to innovate.  They don’t complacently accept “the way it’s done,” if they can figure out an easier, faster way to get the same result.  Shawn Fanning revolutionized music by creating Napster because it was easier – period.   Every song you want, with the click of a mouse?  Sure beats dragging your butt out of bed, leaving your dorm room, catching a ride down to the local record store or mass retailer and actually paying for the CD.  That, folks, is an innovation that can lead to efficiency, expediency and – you guessed it – success.

But it begs the question:

Whether it’s laziness, impatience or simply a refusal to accept the status quo - do these entrepreneurs become successful DESPITE their flaws, or BECAUSE of them?

As the recession teeters between decline and recovery, many new would-be entrepreneurs are created with every massive round of corporate layoffs and every graduating class of students that can’t find a job.  Instead of encouraging them to discover what they love to do and follow it, perhaps we should be encouraging them to discover what they HATE to do – and find a better way to do it.

I’ll be interested to see what aspects of the mundane – tasks we accept as they are because “that’s the way it’s always been done” – are pushed further up the evolutionary ladder by some bright, innovative, creative – and yes, maybe lazy – new entrepreneurs.

What do you think – is “laziness as motivator for entrepreneurial spark” a valid theory?  Disagree with me?

Let me know what you think in the comments.

Laziness as motivator for entrepreneurial spark” a valid theory? I don't think that's the right word to use. I would have to say you have to find some down time. Like walking on a beach to clear your head so you can start your creative juices to come up with great idea's. I love to go camping and take long drives so I have no distractions. That's when I come up with great Idea's. Remember some of the best ideas are simple. Always write down any idea you may have. Also if you have a product the key to your success is distribution. Without it you have just an idea.

You definitely need down time to come up with good ideas. With any idea you come up with you need to have the right timing.

I believe this aspect is growing everywhere as business owners learn what it is. For example, Phoenix is much more sophisticated in this regards than here in Tucson. I average small business owner is still way behind in their understanding such incidents.

Lazyness if the root of all progress.

Will we carry on doing it the old standard way or will we find an easier way that takes less effort?

You only need to work hard when the only solution you can think of is sledgehammer for the nut!

The point of being an entrepreneur is that you are lazy. You want other people to put in the effort. Otherwise you would be self-employed or a contractor.

I don't think this is something that can be taught. Entrepreneurs are born that way. They look at every problem and think of a better way. You do not need to teach them to think this way. You just need to unbrainwash them to rid the notion that everyone needs a 'job'.

It's an interesting thought. I would tend to say that Entrepreneurs are the ones that will work hard now - eg write Napster so that they can be lazy in the future.

Most people will do a little bit more work to avoid the initial outlay and never get to be lazy.

Definitely think that it is not a question of laziness. Yes laziness may "spark" the action, but it is the entrepreneur that actually does something about it :)

Programmers follow this same sort of pattern. They'll spent hours being active & "un-lazy" to find a solution to a problem that allows them to be lazy. It does seem rather odd. Innovation usually makes us lazy.

I think it is a case of laziness being the force that drives the success. If the current equipment isn't good enough for the lazy person to handle the job, they'll invent another way. The wheel's been reinvented thousands of times and put to different uses. Ultra laziness, however is never good.

Entrepreneurs tend to become lazy when they are on the peak of success. But, for me, entrepreneurs must always strive hard even on their peak of success.

I'm not quite sure that not accepting that 'that's the way it's done' equates to laziness. You could argue that it's the opposite - it's quite lazy to just follow the crowd and do things the way others do them. I must admit I always thought that one trait successful entrepreneurs would certainly not have was laziness, but perhaps I've been wrong all this time.

I think the term laziness is perhaps misleading as it has several meanings.

A lazy - lacking in energy and not willing to go that extra step, entrepreneur will fail as being an entrepreneur requires energy and drive to being about change.

A lazy - not accepting that that's the way it's done, is the type of approach that fires the drive of successful entrepreneurs.

Life is littered with opportunities to find a new, lower cost, easier, better way of doing things and it is these opportunities that entrepreneurs find and leverage. They would not do that if they had no drive.

Hello.

I agree on many points, but disagree on one. When you said :
"They don’t complacently accept “the way it’s done,” if they can figure out an easier, faster way to get the same result."

I always try to make it "faster", not because I am lazy, but to get more stuff done.
If an average person, using "the way" does that in 5 hours, I will try to do it in 3, because the "average person" could be a future competitor.

Thanks for reading.
