Entrepreneurship News Round-Up: Week of 7/20/2009

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on July 20, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

Entrepreneurs are defying the recession in New Orleans, LA.  "Even beyond the employment opportunities created by ongoing reconstruction projects, an explosion of entrepreneurialism... is incubating a re-birth of this historic city."  From The Atlantic magazine.

What does Barry Ritholtz think has the potential to be our next financial headache? Commercial Loans.  As thousands of banks report their second-quarter results over the next two weeks, analysts will keep a close eye on losses on commercial real-estate loans by regional banks.  What does this mean for the small business entrepreneur?  For the gazelle?  For our policymakers?

James Altucher at the Wall Street Journal thinks "The Internet is Dead (as an investment)."  While you can't argue that companies which "help us spend the $1 Trillion stimulus" will certainly benefit in the near future, writing off the likes of Google, Facebook and Twitter seems like tempting fate to me.  Although, I did enjoy this quote about the internet: "Can't live without it, but can't live with it (in my portfolio)."

Cash for Clunkers appeared to be heading for the graveyard – but it appears it will be making a return. Congress has approved a further $2 billion to the program, so Cash for Clunkers will continue. The program was lauded by the Department of Energy, for promoting more fuel efficient vehicles, and dealerships for possibly stimulating auto sales. It has been lambasted by critics who claim the government is spending too much.

I think minimum wage should be maintained even though the situation improved in crisis. This would make workers to be calm and loyal to the company
