Innovation = Job Creation, it's a simple equation.

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on July 31, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

We are currently narrowing a field of 30 applicants for 12 available Postdoctoral Researcher/Entrepreneurship Fellowships. The basic premise is that we are selecting a dozen incredibly bright folks from science, technology, engineering and medical fields, and we are going to help them accelerate their particular technology of interest into commercial application – technology commercialization as it is known. On a side but related note, we have also partnered with the National Postdoctoral Association to sponsor the Kauffman Foundation Outstanding Postdoctoral Entrepreneur Award and the Emerging Postdoctoral Entrepreneur Award.

As I had the pleasure of being among those interviewing these incredibly bright individuals, a few things became quite obvious. First, and probably most significantly of any other general characteristic I gleaned, was the high percentage of immigrants. And they came from all over the world – India, Iran, Italy, Finland, Germany, and Scotland just to name a few from my group of interviewees. As it turns out, around 75% of the total field were immigrants. Keeping in mind that applications were from US-based schools, I found this to be astonishing.

Obviously that speaks well of our schools that there is such demand, but it also speaks to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in this country as most of these individuals see their best path to commercializing their technology is in the U.S. That is not to say, however, that there isn’t much more that we could and should be doing to encourage even more activity, but that is a subject for another post.

Another interesting observation was how many of these immigrant scholar entrepreneurs are already well along their way to building companies – several of which already employing others. And rest assured that with the innovations they were promoting in the fields of therapeutics, medical devices, environmental controls, etc., we aren’t talking minimum wage, dead-end jobs.

I know that immigration is touchy subject, and we have certainly published our share of research on this space; but the undeniable fact is that commercializing innovation leads to job creation, which restores the health of our economy. Those that would push out or prevent this source of growth to our economy would be cutting off their xenophobic nose to spite their face. If I had my way, we would staple a green card to each and every diploma from anyone graduating in any of these promising fields.

After all, they may very well bring the innovation to the market that saves your life some day. And if that day should come, I doubt that you will be overly concerned if it were invented with an Asian, European, or Middle Eastern accent.

As always, I am happy to hear supporting and opposing views – that’s what the comment button below is for.

Thom, your information is very true. Some people coming into a country seize the opportunities that are available and create such wonderful lifes through hard work and dedication to their chosen field of endeavour. I believe these people have one great advantage they have come from environments that do not hold as many opportunities for them and are available in abundance in our countries. It is also true that people moving from the cities and relocating to rural areas to balance their lifestyle also create new business opportunities and add value to the communities they join. Maybe the amount of choices we have actually confuses us in pursuing an innovative and creative career. I wonder sometimes with the information overload that we are constantly bombarded with are we losing our ability to think for ourselves creatively.

I am not surprised at the percentage of "brite-people" being from abroad. The upcoming workforce of our homeland is suffering from the want of freedom and flexiiblty in the work place. This is to say--the career is defined as pleasurable and not life intrusive. Those from abroad I have had the pleasure to meet, have a different plan and level of priority. The long term goals are considered first and foremost, before the amount of effort needed is considered; our distraction of pleasurable non-career hours of the day, a side effect of over abundant oppurtunity and security. Americans are spoiled, consider that amount of work ethics and effort, oh' how it has changed in just a generation or two.

Let us keep all our jobs here, but lets educate foreigners , rip them off their mortgages or whatever shit they sold back home to come to come and chase the American dream. Let us give them great education and send them back home.

Thom, appreciate your organizations's efforts to foster innovation. But honestly, I am quite disappointed with the way the US treats immigrant inventors/innovators and entrepreneurs. And even more disappointed at the apathy of this country's business leaders at addressing this problem. Several studies have conslusively found out that the immigrant founders and innovators have positively contributed to the US economy. Yet the immigration laws are designed tio treat them shabbily . And most of these people are doing a thankless job because inspite of their brilliant efforts that have resulted in pumping billions of dollars into the economy, everyone still considers them uninvited guests. It is surprising that the nation's business leaders have completely ignored these issues. If the American public feels that immigrants are not necessarily adding value to the economy, it is fair. In that case, will you please shut down your Immigrant visa program because there are many of us in other countries or even the source countries of these immigrants who would benefit if the US had not been stealing these individuals for several decades. But please do not invite them over there and then ill treat them. if you decide to let them in, please treat them good. Else please stop the skilled visa program.

I am in the tech transfer and research commercialziation area. I do plenty of market research/ due diligence in evaluating the commercial merit of technology disclosures. It is not surprising that a significant number of artciles cited have foreign sounding names as co-authors/co-inventors. It is not difficult to recognize how a good chunk of research in US schools is done by foreigners. I fail to understand why more and more of our kids are shying away from math and science majors.

I must agree to some extent with Victor (above). Many of the innovations seen and developed in the US in the last century came originally from immigrants to the country. Many great minds have been attracted to the US by its various freedoms and the potential for success. It would be a pity if the present administration forgets that and favours only home grown talent.

Despite the alarmist "A Nation at Risk" report decrying the deplorable education facilities in the country, the US universities are in a class of their own.It is therefore not surprising that they attract the best brains from abroad. I think the problem is the American school system. Immigrants from India, Asia, and Europe develop their science and technology skills out of our country and then come to our country and take advantage of our free enterprise system. Only when we fix our education can we compete.
