Entrepreneurship News Round-Up: Week of 6/15/2009

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on June 22, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

Tyler Cowen on the Marginal Revolution blog raises the question (again), "which would you rather have, the fiscal stimulus or $775 billion in public health programs? Even better, how about $300 billion in stimulus -- the immediate stuff like aid to state governments -- and $475 billion in public health programs?"

Yves Smith posts to the Naked Capitalism blog that small businesses are being hit by the credit card crunch. Why is this important? "Using credit cards includes the astute use of float, which can give companies six or seven weeks of free money. And in better days, card companies offered products targeted to small business owners with favorable rates."

Scott Shane launches a new blog at NYTimes.com titled “You're the Boss: The Art of Running a Small Business.”  With his first post the tackles the issue of government support for high-potential startups. In summary, he contends "If the entities advocating this change, and the policy makers considering it, are all willing to accept the idea of an industrial policy for entrepreneurship, then we should change the S.B.I.R. rule. But if this is just about getting V.C.’s and their portfolio companies a subsidy under the guise of a solution to a problem of market failure, then making the change doesn’t strike me as something that we should do."

the 775 bil doesn't have to go towards just the health programs. The money could have been used to pay for car insurance for millions of people

Those six or seven weeks of "free money" give many businesses the means of staying a float. Cashflow will make or break a business.

A more precise way of stating the obvious is that infrastructure matters for modern life and infrastructure matters to improve production efficiencies in the economy. Infrastructure matters for economic development.

yeah I think first priority should be keeping the businesses a float because think how many jobs would have gone under had companies collapse.

I appreaciate the comments before : "I think the stimulus was a huge mistake and waste of the taxpayers money."

If goverment is not careful, stimulus will stimulate a corruption and bankrupcy.

Small businesses contribute 75% of all new jobs. When will Washington understand that they do not have a mandate to spend our money on every agenda under the sun. Instead, they should start helping all of the people that are out of work. Help small businesses grow, and get the economy on track.

you know what? it is very interesting to read details about the stimulus now that months have passed. in australia, which already has a great healthcare system, there was a stimulus also -- and it was perhaps the most well-off Western nation throughout the GFC -- but America NEEDS to focus on healthcare first. perhaps it was too early then. let's see how it turns out, Mr. Obama. I'm rooting for you

Fact is, that e.g. in Germany the credit card is used as payment method for online shopping rather than 8 %.

Politics can have a profound impact on entrepreneurship because policies can create an atmosphere for encouraging entrepreneurship including favorable tax structures, infrastructure development (roads, rail lines, ports etc), low crime, and a well educated workforce.
