Understanding Innovation

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on June 19, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

Successful entrepreneurship is, in many respects, a “perfect storm” of strategic planning, market opportunity, hard work, perseverance, the right team and countless other factors – some within your control as an entrepreneur, and some that aren’t.  One factor that often plays a large role in the early success of start-up ventures is “innovation.”  The good news is that it’s one of the factors that can be controlled.

Thinking about (and attempting to define) “innovation” as a broad, abstract concept is a bit much to wrap your head around, but looking at it as an identifiable, finite moment in time – the “a-ha moment,” if you will – makes it a bit easier to grasp.  The Kauffman Foundation’s VP of Advancing Innovation (ed: great title…) Lesa Mitchell has recorded a number of good, short videos delving into this exact topic – they’re available on the Kauffman site and I’ve linked to them below.

Click here for Lesa Mitchell Videos

We recognize the substantial role that entrepreneurs have played in leading the recovery of past recessions – and the role they’re currently playing and WILL continue to play in recovering from this one.  Because of that, one of the things we’ve attempted to do is to identify a model that illustrates the steps that bridge the gap between purely academic research and entry into the commercial marketplace that many technological, high-growth entrepreneurs and innovators experience on their path to success.

- What factors contribute to the transition?
- What factors aid/hinder it?
- What are the traits of those start-ups and individuals who can consistently do it?
- Are there any common practices, pitfalls or approaches on which we can help shed some light?

That’s essentially the goal of all these efforts to better understand the processes behind the art and science of innovation – to shine a light on what’s being done and bring the knowledge that we can gleam from those insights to entrepreneurs, policy makers and business-people everywhere.

What do you think?  CAN innovation as a component of the entrepreneurial life cycle be weighed, measured, quantified and – ultimately – understood deeply enough to be taught?

Of course innovation CAN and SHOULD be tought to students, in all fields. The greatest innovations are rarely a flash of genius, but rather the result of a disciplined thinking. You can read that one fine book "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" by the powerful Peter Drucker to see exactly what I mean. "The power of Strategy Innovation" and "The Blue Ocean Strategy" are compelling reading too.

One technique we have started using to spur innovation in the workplace is a clearly defined rewards system. Just for submitting an idea that gets through the first screening nets the submitter $200. If the idea should go into production, the submitter can get up to $10,000 or more based on a percentage of profits generated. We have no shortage of good ideas lately.

I think the factors can be taught, but innovation itself? It comes when all the factors come together.

The answer to your question at the end is a resounding YES! Any organization that do not recognize the impact of innovation is at a serious disadvantage in its businesses. Just like how decades ago, knowledge was a seemingly intangible item, it is now valued as an element of the entrepreneurial life cycle. Innovation is the same way. I wouldn't be surprised if there are jobs openings like "Innovation workers" or "Innovation managers" in the next ten years.

I think its something you are born with. The desire to make a difference, to succeed in business, to earn money for yourself. I started on the road to entrepreneurship at a very early age. I used to buy and sell bits and bobs at school, for a bit of extra pocket money. I was 20 before I started my first business though, and ive been in business ever since.

One has to remember than innovation can come in different forms. Innovation does not need to be as i would describe it 'pure' in the sense that it does not have to be a whole step change i.e from bricks and mortar retail to online retailing i.e it can be small increments. This innovation goes on every day without recognition.

However no matter the form that innovation takes i belive its something so untangable it will be a challange to teach.

What drives innovation?

I would say that there are external factors as well as internal (organizational factors) that drive innovation. The external factors would further comprise:

1. Regulations - Eg: where a policy decision either encourages or forces organizations to embrace innovation
2. The Market - Eg: a new demand is identified and the organization can now develop a new product or service to fulfil that demand
3. Competitors - Eg: a competitor launches a new product or service and spends more on innovation initiatives
4. Global Changes - Eg: cheaper resources / outsourcing allow the organization to divert more resources to innovation efforts

Innovation is recession-resistant!

Guess: which tool all of us use everyday was invented in the United States in 1947? The mobile telephone. A year later, a wireless telephone service became available in almost 100 cities and highway corridors. Most early adopters were truck drivers. Now, there are about 3.5 billion cellphones in service across the world, thanks to another invention, that very same year: the transistor — both coming from AT&T’s Bell Labs.

Literally, curricular innovation means "new curriculum" or "new courses", in the context of a change that has not been attempted before.
For teachers, curricular innovation would mean developing new ways to teach a subject. For example, trying a new (for the teacher) technique of teaching students a difficult subject by expressing concepts in terms of other subjects that the students enjoy, or better understand, would be an application of curricular innovation.
For school administrators, curricular innovation would more likely refer to a radical change in what subjects are taught, or how different subjects are organized into different classes. One example of curricular innovation of this type would be the combination of two related courses into a single class (at my high school, there was an honors class that combined english with history/social studies). It is also possible that this would refer to an administration level policy to encourage, enforce curricular innovation as described in the first paragraph.
For students, curricular innovation might refer to new methods of studying, but it is more likely to mean one of the above concepts being imposed upon them.
