VIDEO: Speaking About Entrepreneurship at the C2ER Conference

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on June 26, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of addressing a roomful of individuals at the 49th Annual Conference of the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) in Kansas City, MO.  The theme of this year’s event was "Energizing Entrepreneurship: Monitoring Progress, Making Change,” and my presentation centered around a few related themes, essentially trying to answer some of the larger, looming questions around entrepreneurship and what makes it so vitally important.

At the macro level, we step back and try to put a fence around “the ecosystem of entrepreneurship” for the purpose of studying and understanding:

- What is entrepreneurship?
- Who are the practitioners of the craft?
- Why should we care?
- Why should it be a policy priority?
- When and where should we be practicing entrepreneurship?

We then delve into greater detail to discuss questions such as:

- How do the nuances of entrepreneurship differ across cultures, internationally?
- Are entrepreneurs born or made?
- Can entrepreneurship be taught?
- Within the U.S., what’s the difference between “What do you do?” (West Coast) and “Who do you work for?” (Middle America)?

I found it to be a thoroughly rewarding experience, and very refreshing to actually see the increased energy, attention and focus on entrepreneurship that may be the “silver lining”/byproduct to our current economic woes.

I like the topic : Are entrepreneurs born or made? No one is born as a winner or as a loser, it's all about YOU! Your choice - You want to be entrepreneur or You do not want to be entrepreneur!

In my opinion entrepreneurs are made - you need to be strong and confident an you need good ideas of course. In finland there are a lot of good people who had created nice startups in just few month...

I checked out the presentation in your link and learned a lot from it! Thanks!

I'm an entrepreneuer, though not at the level of Richard Branson, for example.

One of the most important by-products of being an entrepreneur is that we contribute greatly to the hiring of people to work for us.

This helps improve the poor unemployment picture in the U.S.

I read recently that small businesses are the #1 source of employment in the U.S.

Long live us entrepreneurs!

Very exciting to attend the conference. The question posed is a basic question and the core of entrepreneurship. Sometimes we hesitate on entrepreneurship for many things such as capital constraints, the country's economic conditions are not stable, mentality, ext.

Inspiring and motivating. Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the conference but I found your presentation most inspiring - and thought provoking. While I agree with much of what was presented my personal view is that not everybody makes an effective entrepreneur - but that doesn't mean to say that the skills necessary to become a successful entrepreneur can't be learned. The current economic downturn has forced many, including myself, to look for alternative's to paid employement.

I am an entrepreneur and in the beginning it was hard, but now I see that this the only way I can make my living. Becoming an entrepreneur takes a lot of courage and mental toughness, but despite the difficulties it all worth it, because what thing in this world is easy, nothing... And I always like to learn new things and get my motivation stronger, so I listen to all kind of motivational talks and this one was very inspiring, wrote down some good points in my success journal!
