Entrepreneurship in a Recession

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on May 12, 2009 Source: e360 Blog

The economy has slowed down, unemployment is up, and investment has grinded to a halt - so how does an entrepreneur, in the face of all odds, continue to thrive in such a market? The truth is, recessions are still suited for entrepreneurial growth [PDF], but your mindset, attitude, and actions might have to shift to meet the current market demands. Just because policy makers continue to bail out failed industries, despite Americans belief that government bailout dollars should go to small businesses , doesn't mean your start-up can’t take off now. Below are some ideas to help you weather the recession and come out on top.

Streamline and Go Green.

If you haven't started yet, now is the time. Small businesses everywhere are starting to jump on the "Green" bandwagon and for billions of good reasons - namely stimulus spending. Making competant choices about environmental impact can often cut energy consumption costs and, at the same time, serve as a cheap marketing vehicle. Whether switching out your gas-guzzling company vehicles with hybrids, which can save businesses money via tax breaks and fuel efficiency, or finding local, organic products for your restaurant, going green can be turned into a unique selling point. Making the investment in these improvements often means lower operating costs in the future, a characteristic for which many investors are looking.

Don't Be Afraid to Ask.

Pride (or shyness) often gets in the way of successful entrepreneurship. Don't let it.
  • Ask for a Deal
Every price is negotiable. It may not be in your best interest to haggle over the price of an individual pencil, but when it comes to making business purchases both large and small, don't be afraid to ask for a deal. Search for products that meet your needs but may not be the latest-and-greatest. If your office needs a new printer, go to the local store and see what printers they are offering for free with the purchase of a computer. Chances are, they are just trying to get rid of the old-model printer - and if you ask, you can get them for a steal. Try to shop at stores where the managers will have more discretion over pricing. This often means locally owned-and-operated venues, so you can feel good about keeping your dollars in the community as well. Finally, always price shop online first. If you can print out a real competitor's price, the local store will almost always honor it.

  • Ask for Investment
You do believe in your business, right? You believe that your business will make money, right? If your business will make you money, it will make your friends, family, and community money as well. The next time you hesitate at finding ways to bring in additional investment, ask yourself this - if I don't believe my business is worth others investing in, why should I? As strange as it may sound, your business might be the safest investment for your friends and family, as real estate and the stock market continue to take hits. Just be careful when negotiating valuation and equity stakes.

  • Ask for Help
Entrepreneurship can be lonely at times. Instead of learning to reinvent the wheel, surround yourself with people who are competant and don't be afraid to ask for advice, product reviews, or testimonials. Think about the things that make you uniquely qualified as an entrepreneur and make sure you know those better than anyone else. For the rest, get some help. Be creative and even consider business bartering. This may be the perfect opportunity for you to make the relationships that will be valuable when the economy turns around.

Resources on Asking

Find the right people, keep them happy.

Find people who are also inspired by your vision. Let's be honest, starting up a business is not easy and your first few employees are going to experience the same ups-and-downs that you do. However, if your business idea truly has potential, you will be able to find likeminded individuals who are excited about being a part of your team. Those first few hires will be key to your long-term success, so find people who are ready for battle, and not just looking for a 9-to-5.

More importantly, once they are on board find ways to keep them happy, even without money. Be as honest as possible both when you hire the individual and as you make salary decisions about the state of the company, not just their performance. Show them how you cut back personally so that they can thrive in the workplace. Make life easier for them by making the workplace more comfortable or fun.

Get Online, Fast

It really doesn't matter what your business does, you need a website. It is the easiest way for potential customers to find your business hours, location, and to refer friends. Make sure that it is professional and well-kept. Don't add information to the site that needs to be updated unless you have the time and resources to keep it updated (for example, if you run a restaurant with seasonal menus, don't publish them unless you can keep them updated).

  2. The Easy Way to Launch Your Web Business via SCORE
  3. Get a Blog via Wordpress
  4. Create a Business Website with Google via Google

Go Open Source

I know this is a bit of a religion for many. But, there are many ways to save yourself and your business money and going Free Open Source Software (FOSS) is one to consider. Many people don't realize that there are completely free alternatives to the expensive software you use to run your business. Whether it is simple desktop publishing, graphic design, or managing finances, chances are there is a free, viable alternative to meet your young business's needs. Moreover, your company's proclivity towards open source may help you attract ideologically minded employees who care more about doing things right.

During the times of recession, each and every one of us should look for alternative work than can give us extra income. Entrepreneurship in a recession is a great idea. But we should be wise in choosing the best business during recession. Automakers are in trouble worldwide, but it seems that the U.S. automakers are in far more trouble than others. Well, they did get a lot of bailout money, and they're looking for even more installment loans to float them in the recession. General Motors is in some of the worst trouble. They are looking for a lot more in gap financing to keep them above water, yet they have obviously lost a lot of money as evidenced by their recently posted first quarter figures. Ford is the lone wolf of the automakers, as they have only asked for stand by credit instead of direct debt relief. For me, the best thing to do is to save money.

Many an entrepreneur finds these days to be a little more hostile than in the past for new businesses. With a downturned economy, there are fewer ways of finding a new funding option. Some people on the lookout for the right business owner to invest in or the right product to start shopping around have gone to installment loans, in order to provide them with the credit necessary for businesses to operate. However, a savvy business person keeps their options open, and knows how to scrape by when times get tough. The right kind of entrepreneur never needs debt consolidation.

These are good thoughts. A down economy is a great time to start a new venture because there might be extra talent to choose from and most people will be looking to alternatives and new ways of doing business.

I would second the fact that you don't know where investment will come from unless you ask, but I would also caution to think carefully before doing so. As a practicing business law attorney, I have seen many entrepreneurs make some early mistakes with securities that ultimately cause problems down the line. If you have to take on equity investors, you should stick with common stock (rather than preferred) and consult with an attorney before doing so to make sure that you do it right.

Even better, new entrepreneurs should try to bootstrap as much as possible and look for alternative ways of funding. I tell my clients directly and through my blog at http://thebusinesslawblog.com that one of the best ways to build your new business in a down economy is finding strategic partners that can help you grow your business without having to take on investors. Looking for ways to exchange services or barter is a great way to build credibility, referral sources, and experience without tying your hands or giving away too much control down the line.

Some great tips on how to help save money as well as get tax benefits in this article. Anyone preparing to take on this type of move needs to be sure to do their homework ahead of time. Look into stats of that field, is it on the rise or fall? Will there be room for growth? Are you coming in on the cutting edge or the tail wind? And of course, always be sure to have any and all investment proposals reviewed by your attorney before agreeing.

If you are a true entrepreneur then recessions are good. The economic cycle of the majority industries usually works out as having a few competitors as en economy moves out of a recession. As the economy grows, more entrants appear in an industry, as the economy approaches its peak, the number of incumbents approaches a peak, competition approaches a peak and this tends to hit profits. The recession then weeds out the least inefficient firms!

If you have a business that succeeds as you move out of a recession, you tend to get at least two years of really good profits before the level of competition increases!

I'm a firm believer that entrepreneurship is something that only certain people can understand. We've had a business for sale for 6 months, it is a great business, very profitable, easy to understand at a good price where you will make the cost of it in 6 months no problems.

Having talked to all kinds of different people, the majority don't have an incling as to how a business should run. The only thing that matters are the profits in the accounts, there is so much more to business than profits but they never understood. Cash is king and a positive cash flow is absolutely vital to a new business. I just don't believe that there are many real entrepreneurs out there now!

I think it is at least a good sign that GDP grew by over five percent the last quarter, and once unemployment drops below ten percent we'll be well on the road to recovery.

I would start networking right now while they economy is down. I would make a website and start advertising as much as possible. Then when the economy recovers more people will know about your business and you'll be better off than other companies.

I started a business in the previous recession ( early 90's) and it turned out great, and sold it four years later for a nice profit.

I see recessions as opportunities, not obstacles and so far the current recession is also turning very positively for me.

Best luck to all

When people start out on their own they normally fail for two reasons.

1. The do not expect to operate in the negative for so long and lack capital to survive.

2. They lack a business plan and have much higher expenses than expected.

Either can kill a business before it can make a profit.

Excellent ideas on how to thrive in a down economy. I would also add under Streamline And Go Green that small businesses and entrepreneurs "Go Paperless."

Although an entirely paperless office may not be possible, a great deal of waste can be eliminated in the form of: 1) time and effort searching for paper documents, 2) real estate space for file cabinets and storage, and, 3) reduced paper, ink and mailing expenses related to document management.

I think "Get Online Fast" and Go Opensource" are two recommendations that every business, whether entrepreneurial or not, should follow. The online channel is still in its infancy and most small businesses have the opportunity to carve out and dominate their niche out of the shadow of the big boys.

Open source - well this could be called free and better software. Just because it does not have Microsoft's Marketing investment does not mean it is worse - entrepreneurs check this wonderful opportunity out today.

I would add a final point - Remember a recession is an opportunity. Recessions mean your competitors are under pressure. Innovation and drive means you have the opportunity to gain an advantage on them particularly if you are starting a new business line unencumbered by a set of business baggage acquired in the 'good times'.

I think that recession is a good stimulus for entrepreneurs. It forces them to come up with new creative ideas on how to survive and run their business. Necessity causes creativity. Recession does, too.

I agree. Recessions are good. Depressions are not. If we keep letting the insane run the asylum we are all in for a very poor existence. We must reign in unnecessary spending at all levels, not just at the Fed or State gov't level. This includes properly educating children on how money and true values really work and not just allowing television programming to determine their values.

There is always opportunities what-ever the situation. I am not sure if this is the most tasteful example but...A few years ago there was the Asian Tsunami that killed millions of people. Up until that point, there were charities in the region that were dying. As a result they were able get back to work. An opportunity came along and they took it. Now some of these charities are flourishing as a result of the funds that came in.
in the same way there is a recession on. but opportunities are still there. People will still need to spend money, just find a way of getting people to spend.
Perhaps need to think differently, don't for example go and start a restaurant business: people are not willing to spend their cash on eating out. Instead why not start a business in say helping people with bankruptcy.
money is always there, just got to find the suitable way getting it in the situation.

Small businesses are usually 1-2 man jobs - mostly depending on the time the owners invest and their brain power. With good ideas - esp in the IT fields one can really excel in a recession due to mobility, elastic terms and conditions and low costs.

It's the ideal time to rationalise and consolidate, life isn't permanent steady growth for any business, trim back on costs, cutting back on the less productive staff and above all as an employer you find the market is full of very skilled people who are looking for work, you can trade in for some really good people who will be very grateful to be working.
