Leveraging Broadband to Power Growth

Posted by: Thom Ruhe on February 20, 2010 Source: e360 Blog

Last week the FCC unveiled recommendations for using broadband to advance key national priorities. The plan, which can be read here, identifies the top priorities as:

• Creating jobs and economic opportunity
• Improving healthcare and controlling costs
• Providing more educational opportunities and improving outcomes
• Promoting energy independence and efficiency
• Enhancing government performance & increasing civic engagement
• Increasing public safety & homeland security

A national broadband policy that recognizes the tremendous societal benefit that can be served by focusing on increased access and less barriers to entry is welcome. For that matter, a national broadband policy that defines standards would be welcome; as was postulated by Internet Media Pundit Shelly Palmer, last summer.

Broadband and communications technology can only help in the birthing and growth of new ventures, which are the sole source of all net job gains today. Increasing access to educational resources, mentoring, and funding, are likewise helping launch new firms. A cogent national broadband policy can accelerate these activities at this critical time in our economic recovery.

So take a moment to read the working paper and add your voice to the discussion.

The kind of ultra-fast broadband that is being proposed is a a must for every economy. Those who have it first will be at a big advantage and will be able to make the important first steps into the new opportunities that the digital economy will offer.

Interesting... There is no doubt that broadband has made it possible for thousands of small business to thrive. Why should it be any different for the government.

If the telecomms didn't have a monopoly on everything, we'd have decent broadband already (on par with the rest of the world)

This document, first published outside of government here, is more important than just a sample list of the first broadband stimulus project awards. It demonstrates key strategic thinking of the Obama Administration in the area of telecommunications policy.

I believe that broadband is THE future and have a lot of faith in the national broadband policy. I especially like the idea of providing job training and placement services.
