Microbe Mind Control: The Toxoplasma Parasite and its Effects on Animal Behavior

Amielle Moreno, Graduate Student in Neuroscience

Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences

Emory University

So if microbes can take control of their hosts' immune systems or vital organs, can they also take control of their brains?

In this talk Amielle Moreno, a neuroscience graduate student, will take a look at the link between the parasite Toxoplasma Gondii and abnormal behavior of mice and men. Learn how this microbe navigates multiple species in a life cycle and how its hosts start misbehaving. Find out what might happen when it finds itself in a human brain.

Recent research on how T. Gondii might be linked to schizophrenia will be explored as we discover how normal goes out the window when brains get sick.

About our Speaker

Amielle Moreno is a recent transplant from Seattle where she received her BS in Psychology and Cellular Molecular Biology from the University of Washington. After two years of color vision research, she is now working on her PhD in Neuroscience at Emory University. Amielle has years of experience in primate research and is excited to share her interest in behavioral neuroscience.
