Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.
The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. About Startup Weekend MU
Startup Weekend at Miami University invites all of the Miami University community who want to learn what it takes to start a business in one weekend. All are welcome to participate whether you have an idea or just want to work on a business startup team to understand the ‘how-to’ of launching a business. Startup Weekend MU is a 48 hour immersion event that builds companies, teams, and insight.
The participants that attend a Startup Weekend decide what they want to tackle over the weekend and come out at the end with several developed companies or projects. Attendees are responsible for bringing desire and passion to whatever project they work on and will walk out with a business prototype and the launch process roadmap.
What do Attendees get?
Startup Weekend provides an unprecedented level of networking, team building, and learning for participants. Don’t forget that there will be 5 meals provided along with snacks, and a Startup Weekend t-shirt! Sometimes a company emerges, sometimes one doesn’t. Some companies go on to produce revenue or get seed funding, but every time people leave with more experience, insight, knowledge, friends, and resources than they came with.
Miami Students who complete Startup Weekend will receive:
-1 hr of course credit for completing ESP 102: Startup Bootcamp (students must be at the event for all check-ins to receive credit)
-Meetings with successful entrepreneurs, mentors and alumni
-Understanding the process of launching a business and key issues to address
-Networking with other like-minded members of the Miami community interested in starting businesses
-Introduction to the Miami Student Venture Fund and local business incubators and accelerators
-Exposure to the nationally ranked Institute for

Rahul Bawa | Director of Digital & Software Investments, Cincy Tech
Rahul Bawa is the Director of Digital and Software Investments at CincyTech. He evaluates investment opportunities, advises startup companies and helps them with their business and technology growth strategies.
Rahul joined CincyTech in June 2011 with over 24 years of Information Technology experience in a variety of leadership positions. Most recently he was Chief Information Officer for Axcess Financial Services from 2004-2011. In this role, Rahul’s team developed innovative technology solutions including a new Point-of-Sale system to support the aggressive growth of various business units in the US and UK providing short-term lending and check cashing solutions. Prior to joining Axcess Financial, Rahul was Vice President of eBusiness for Fifth Third Bank where he transformed Fifth Third’s eBusiness solutions including the implementation of a new consumer Internet Banking solution, a new B2B eBusiness portal, new retail branch and call center transaction systems and a new Intranet.
Rahul also spent 7 years at IBM working on the US air traffic control system, 4 years at United Airlines where he launched the original version of www.ual.com and 3 years at Xpedior, Inc (a Chicago-based eBusiness consulting organization) where he grew annual revenue from $4M to $70M.
A native of India, Rahul holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree in Information Systems from the University of Cincinnati.
