IRC Bots and Activity Feeds with MongoDB - At BranchOut
Tuesday, January 22, 2013
333 Bryant Street, Suite 320, San Francisco, CA (map)
Happy New Year everyone. Looking forward to great meetups in 2013.
We'll have a presentation from Ryan Jarvinen, OpenShift Evangelist and Nate Smith, Director of Engineering at BranchOut
Ryan Jarvinen, Bots as a Service:
Improve your team's productivity and encourage participation with social IRC bots! Find out how to create scoreboards, encourage positive communication by awarding points, and bring your bot to life using OpenShift, Red Hat's free auto-scaling Platform as a Service. We'll power our bot using an OpenShift "gear", then add a MongoDB "cartridge" for memory, and teach it to speak by creating a basic DSL which will serve as our user interface. We'll attempt to accept feature suggestions from the crowd as we build.
OpenShift is Red Hat's free, auto-scaling Platform as a Service (PaaS) for applications. As an application platform in the cloud, OpenShift manages the stack so you can focus on your code.
How to build a Facebook-style activity feed with MongoDB
"Orchard" is BranchOut's activity feed, allowing users to see a ranked/aggregated feed of content created by their connections on the site. We'll discuss how MongoDB powers Orchard, architectural decisions, and our own internal DOs and DON'Ts for deploying MongoDB successfully. If you've ever wanted to build a large social application using Mongo, this talk should get you started.
Nathan Smith, director of engineering and founding team member of BranchOut, is a software geek, club rugby player, surfer, and California kid.
