Hustler’s Lunch is a monthly gathering of Biz Dev Hustlers where we share war stories, make connections, identify mentorship opportunities, and help strengthen the Entrepreneurial community in Calgary.

This month we’ll be focused on Growth Hacking and Leveraging Online Communities. Let’s hear your war stories on how Hustlers have used Linkedin, Facebook and other groups to find and score new customers. Throw in some parlance around viral vs paid acquisition and some content marketing and you’ve got yourself a jam packed hour of Hustler Stank.

1 – Who’s your daddy? Errr…who’s your target market? You want to gain visibility then you need to know who you’re going after. Get to know them well…what motivates them, where they hang, who they hang with, they rolling blood or crypt?

2 – Get their attention with white papers: Position your company as a thought leader…give them a taste of your knowledge…then close the deal like a boss.

3 – Advocate don’t playa hate. Get all employees on the advocacy train…why does Lululemon give their employees super-mega discounts? Because they know you want to see those yoga pants on more than just manikins yo. (that goes for guys and girls alike…you ever find yourself on the south side of me walking north watch out…my Lululemon clad ass will git’cha) Yoga pants aside…your entire team should always be hyping your product anywhere and everywhere because you never know where that next deal will come from.

4 – Publicity – The general consensus around the room was that publicity is like sex: The best is NOT PAID FOR. If you want publicity you need to have a plan…putting together press releases is the easy part…now focus on building a distribution list that’s pro. Develop relationships with as many media outlets as possible, and remember, media is like your gran-pappy, and needs to be spoon fed to be successful.

5 – Rocking the swap meet…Tradeshow SWAGG. We’ve all attended or even participated in a tradeshow. The real question is: Was it worth it? Tradeshows can be great tools to close deals with existing relationships, but don’t head into it thinking you’re going to make it rain with new business. New leads may be identified, but have a plan in place to follow up because there ain’t no money trees at the tradeshow.

So that’s that…you’ve got your visibility plan dialed in.

Background: According to Dave McClure, most VC’s suck balls and Startups should have 3 main skillsets: Hackers, Hipsters and Hustlers.*

We aren’t interested in VC’s (or balls for that matter) but we are interested in talking about business and growth. There are plenty of groups for Hackers (developers/engineers) and for Hipsters (designers/creatives) but what about the Hustlers? What about the people who are tasked with finding customers and selling in Startups? Well, that’s who we are and that’s what we are interested in.

Part business development, part salesperson, part product manager, part support agent…we wear a lot of hats. Not to mention the fact that in a Startup, being a Hustler isn’t always a role in itself.
