Dept. of Making + Doing Launch Party
Saturday, May 11, 2-6 pm, FREE
Join us for the official launch of the Department of Making + Doing, a special partnership between Breadboard, NextFab Studio, Public Workshop, and The Hacktory. The Department of Making + Doing is an intergenerational, collaborative, hands-on, civic innovation workshop that provides the space, the tools, and the knowledge to empower youth, adults and community organizations—ultimately inspiring citizens to make and do great things in Philadelphia. At our launch party you can work with others to build massive cardboard towers; laser cut or vinyl print your own I Heart (your neighborhood name) keychain or bumper sticker; try your hand with a japanese saw and help build a bench to improve a public space in Philadelphia; and you certainly wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to make light-up circuits out of various soft and squishy materials. Show your love for making and doing and DM+D by bringing your own t-shirt or bag to silkscreen. There will also be tours and more information about what you can make and do at the Department of Making + Doing in the very near future. All ages and families welcome. RSVP here.
Parking Info: Street parking is available. Free public parking in the garage at 3711 Market. Enter the lot from Filbert Street off of 36th. When you pull into the garage you will need to take a ticket and request a chaser ticket at the event or you will be charged.
Intro to Interactive Art
Wednesday, May 22, 6-8 pm, $10
Are you interested in exploring how to use new technology to expand your artistic practice? Have an idea you want to bring to life but it involves projections or motors, or other technology you’re just not that familiar with? Come to this class to learn about how to talk about this new frontier of art, the software and hardware options available, and learn about the tutorials and classes that can help you get started. In the first hour, three artists working in this field will briefly share projects they’ve worked on, how they made them, and how they chose and learned to use the technology they needed. In the second hour, we will help you install the software you’re most interested in, and get started working with it. All attendees should bring a laptop.
