Startup Weekend Calgary - Celebrating Awesome Women in Tech!

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour event that brings together designers, developers and business folk to create a startup! As a team you’ll form, storm, norm and perform through concepts like ideation, customer validation and the business model canvas. All skill levels and backgrounds are welcome. If you’re excited about exploring entrepreneurship, this is the event for you! Throughout the weekend we’ll be bringing in coaches to provide you with guidance and support. These are some of the most talented, successful tech entrepreneurs in our community. The event culminates in a final pitch to a panel of judges and the top three teams will be awarded with some pretty awesome prizes!

Why a women-focused Startup Weekend? We want to engage more women in entrepreneurship and specifically, in startups. Hosting a women-focused event creates a safe, supportive environment for you to explore that! A big goal for the event is to provide the opportunity for aspiring women entrepreneurs in our community to (1) get inspired by an idea/product/team… perhaps enough to explore starting their own venture, or (2) become more connected with other brilliant entrepreneurially-minded individuals in Calgary and thus more engaged within our local entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Are men allowed to attend Women’s Startup Weekend? Yes! Since this edition is about connecting entrepreneurial women through the process of building exciting companies, we want to connect them to the best resources and people out there – that includes both men and women. That said, to ensure that we maintain a high percentage of female participants, the number of tickets we issue to men will be limited.

Will I be required to pitch or work on “women-focused” startup ideas? No, participants can pitch and work on any kind of startup idea they wish.

What if I don’t have an idea? That’s okay! It’s not a requirement to come to Startup Weekend Calgary Women’s Edition. Having an idea is great and it will come in handy, but if you don’t have one, don’t worry - you’ll be just as valuable to a team you join.

Public speaking makes me uncomfortable. Do I need to pitch? No, you won’t be forced to pitch if you don’t want to. But this is a really great opportunity for you to challenge yourself in a safe, supportive environment and we encourage you to try. That’s what this event is all about anyway - trying new things, challenging yourself and exploring

What if I can’t find a team? We won’t let anyone be left out. It’s easy for us to do some shuffling to make sure everyone is on a team.

I’m not a designer and I’m not a developer. Will my skills still be valuable? Yes! We need designers and developers to help create a working product, but business skills (whether that’s marketing, finance, management or something in-between) will create the foundation for your product. Any skillset/educational background is welcome. The only requirement is an interest in exploring entrepreneurship and startups!
