iCreate to Educate leverages existing technology and students' creativity through intuitive, low-cost tools that increase engagement across all content areas, particularly science and math. Founded in June 2010, iCreate delivers software based on research out of Tufts University that allows K-12 students to build and express their ideas through making stop-motion videos. After a successful pilot of working directly with teachers on how they can easily integrate the software into their lessons, iCreate is launching a student-generated content gallery with activity modules in the summer of 2011. Ultimately iCreate will be the go-to resource for teachers looking to enhance their existing lessons with affordable tools…where the learning curve remains on the content and not the technology.

Notable accomplishments for iCreate to date include:

  • Revenue generation
  • 33,000 downloads of the free software option
  • Case studies of both special education and gifted schools showing an increase in content retention, conceptual understanding, and engagement by the students after using iCreate's software
  • Partnership with Singapore Science Center
  • Partnership with Klutz, a Scholastic-owned company

Melissa Pickering, founder of iCreate to Educate, is a former Imagineer for the Walt Disney Company, and most recently managed an educational research nonprofit focused on bringing engineering into K-12 education. Inspired by her own experiences with project-based learning in her early school years, which largely influenced her path to mechanical engineering, Melissa launched iCreate to address the need to give students an opportunity to express, engage, and be excited about learning. In March 2011, Melissa was honored by Mass High Tech as a Woman to Watch, an award given to female leaders of the New England technology and innovation community.
