Financing Growth: Helping More Americans Help Entrepreneurs
In his State of the Union Address next week, President Obama will shift gears back to job creation after his inauguration speech focused on wider themes. As the debate about how the government can help the economy regain its pre-recession strength enters a new phase, the Kauffman Foundation’s annual “State of Entrepreneurship Address” last week in Washington, DC, focused on how financial constraints have been blocking the success of new and young firms that create most of the net new jobs.
Entrepreneurship in the Land of Opportunity
The newest installment of the Kauffman Sketchbook video series tells the great American success story of an immigrant entrepreneur who starts with very little yet achieves great things. The video features Gururaj "Desh" Deshpande, an Indian American venture capitalist and entrepreneur, who is co-founder of the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at MIT and the Deshpande Foundation.
This Week in Entrepreneurship Policy
On the heels of the Kauffman Foundation’s State of Entrepreneurship Address, a couple of Congressional committees are taking a closer look at the economy. The House Small Business Committee is conducting a hearing on The State of the Small Business Economy that will focus on “current economic indicators that measure the health of the economy, with a specific focus on access to capital… (and) general economic concerns that small business owners will face in the coming year.” Meanwhile, the House Budget Committee will explore the Congressional Budget Office’s budget and economic outlook with CBO director Douglas Elmendorf and the Senate Budget Committee will look at the budget and economic outlook over the next 10 years. Other hearings include: comprehensive immigration reform, applications for IT research and development; innovation in education; manufacturing in American; outlook on energy and a review of the government’s approach toward unemployment.
