A new book out takes a look at the long-term trends that are ushering in a new era of global prosperity—and you can probably guess the common thread. ‘The Coming Prosperity: How Entrepreneurs are Transforming the Global Economy’ offers analysis of economic and historical trends brought to life through the stories of entrepreneurs making a difference.
New data from the National Science Foundation shows that the amount spent by U.S. universities on research and development reached $61.2 billion in 2010--an increase of 6.9% from the previous year.
According to a new paper from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, development spearheaded by entrepreneurs and startups could create a "virtuous circle" of growth and reform to overcome violence and weak governance in Pakistan and other fragile states where traditional development programs have failed.
With all eyes on the anticipated House approval of the JOBS Act (the Senate passed a modified version last week 73-26), several hearings are still on our radar screen for the week ahead. Cyber-security gets scrutinized by several subcommittee hearings on the House side while the Senate deals with mobile payments and renewable energy tax incentives among other issues.
While the Senate approved the JOBS Act late last week, it attached an amendment that requires House approval before the legislation makes it to President Obama to be signed into law. However, the amendment—which increases investor protections in crowdfunding—is not enough to derail the hugely popular legislation which is expected to sail through the House easily this week.
The latest Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity shows that the rate of new business creation dipped during 2011 and startup founders remained more likely to go it alone than to employ others—quite possibly due to the continued recession and the typically higher rate of necessity entrepreneurs during periods of economic distress.
