While the original House and Senate calendars called for recess last week, members of the Senate remained in Washington to work on a funding bill that would avert a government shutdown. It passed a six-week bill by a 79-12 vote and also passed a one-week continuing resolution to give the House until October 4 to act. The Senate has 13 new members with the Democrats maintaining control -- increasing their edge to 55-45. The House of Representatives has 84 new members with the Republicans maintaining control -- slipping a few seats to outnumber Democrats 233-200.
