Big Ideas from "Green" Entrepreneurs?

Mark Marich

The World Bank is looking for a few bright ideas from the next generation of "green" entrepreneurs. It is sponsoring an international essay contest for 18-25 year olds to share ideas for youth-led solutions to challenges posed by climate change. The challenge casts a wide net, encouraging contestants to consider environmentally sustainable enterprises, energy efficiency measures and even economic incentives for low-carbon choices.

I will be interested to see how many of the contestants focus on technological innovations that increase the supply of clean energy, rather than efforts to restrict demand.

I admit, "I will unplug stuff more" (and the other posters in Chevron's 'will you join us?' campaign) is a cool idea for an ad campaign, but will it really have an impact on consumers?

Not only do I not unplug stuff more, I leave my PC running constantly in my attic so I can wirelessly stream music through my house using iTunes and a Roku Soundbridge. If I'm willing to pay the extra $5 per month to the electric company, why should I feel guilty about it?
