BYU Recognized for Commercialization Efforts

Mark Marich

Brigham Young University was recently recognized in a BusinessWeek story as an "entrepreneur factory." According to the Association ofUniversity Technology Managers (AUTM), BYU now ranks first in the country inthe number of startups, licenses, and patent applications per research dollarspent.

The private Mormon university has increased its output considerably over the past several years thanks in part to strategic hires and outreach to an extensive alumni network. While not mentioned in the same breath as commercialization giants like Stanford and MIT, BYU is starting to stack up as a birthplace for start-ups and life-changing innovations:

BYU-licensed technology led to the creation of nine new companies last year on a research budget of roughly $30 million. Stanford, with a budget of $1.1 billion, spawned the same number of startups.
