Top 50 Innovations in Government

Mark Marich

Finalists for the prestigious Harvard Innovations in American Government Awards were recently unveiled by the school's Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation. The fifty cited programs will be winnowed down to six final winners who will be officially announced in May.

This larger group of finalists includes a host of fascinating programs that come from all parts of the country, many different types of government agencies, and in many different sectors and issue areas. A number of the programs, such as Delaware’s K-5 early intervention program and Chicago’s New Leaders for New Schools, focus on needed education reforms. Several programs, such as New York City’s Office of Financial Empowerment and Wisconsin’s Office of Financial Literacy, seek to promote financial literacy among both youth and adults. At the Federal level, the Treasury Department’s New Markets Tax Credit program, which helps promote investment in distressed communities, is among several national award finalists.
