According to a new article by Vivek Wadhwa in BusinessWeek, Boulder, Colorado is the top U.S. destination for new tech companies largely because of a bottom-up revolution led by entrepreneurs. Wadhwa traces that revolution:
1970s: "The combination of entrepreneurship, engineering talent, and a counterculture vibe gave rise to many pre-bubble Net startups."
mid 1990s: entrepreneurs and venture capitalists like Foundry Group's Brad Feld moved to the area, attracting even more experienced entrepreneurs and managers.
mid 2000s: Serial entrepreneur David Cohen and other create a business boot camp for startups.
The author repors that Boulder residents often say that the best thing their state government can do is invest in education and otherwise stay out of the way.
