Catalyzing Regional Innovation

Science Progress, a blog sponsored by the Center for American Progress, recently asked a number of experts to offer their thoughts on how the new Obama Administration can best catalyze regional innovation. This effort, "Regional Centers of Innovation 101," is tied with its ongoing Task Force on Centers of Regional Innovation. Contributors offered some interesting ideas, including:

James Jordan and Paul Kornblith suggest that Pittsburgh’s Life Sciences Greenhouse is a model for how to do business incubation right.
The University of North Carolina’s Maryann Feldman argues that economic development leaders need to act like entrepreneurs. They need to be adaptable as it is often impossible to predict new technologies, new opportunities, or new market directions.
Richard Seline and Steven Miller argue that Federal programs need to operate in a new network-like structure. Washington needs to invest resources in a way that encourages regions to build collaborations across sectors, jurisdictions, and areas of expertise.
Stephen Ezell contends that the United States has fallen behind the innovation curve and can learn from other industrialized democracies.
