Entrepreneurship News Round-Up: Week of 8/10/2009

Thom Ruhe, Director of Entrepreneurship, The Kauffman Foundation

Alibaba.com has kicked-off a new marketing campaign that includes TV, print and online media and targets entrepreneurs. There’s a new version of its U.S. microsite and three video "mock-umentaries" to greet visitors to the site with entertaining stories of how entrepreneurs used Alibaba.com to find suppliers and manufacturers to help them launch their businesses. The TV ads are currently running on CNBC and ABC, with other ads appearing in Inc., Fast Company, Women's Wear Daily and on Purchasing.com.

The New York Daily News has an interview with Manhattan-based business baroness Barbara Corcoran, one of the judges on ABC’s new reality TV show “Shark Tank.”  On the show, wannabe entrepreneurs get the chance to pitch their ideas and secure funding to kick-start a business.  Corcoran is an entrepreneur herself, having turned a $1,000 loan into a $5 billion real estate company.

A new program named “Top Gun” takes aim at entrepreneurs in Maine.  Steve Bazinet, President of the Maine Center for Enterprise Development in Portland, is looking for “next generation business leaders,” the innovative entrepreneurs who can see their ideas and companies generating millions in revenues.  Enrollees get a personal mentor, access to lawyers, accountants and industry professionals and 12 weeks of homework that culminate in a pitch before investors.
