Innovation in North Carolina

North Carolina has done a good job of building a strong innovation economy, particularly as it relates to world-class educational institutions and a capable workforce. But, as a new report sponsored by the North Carolina Board of Science and Technology notes, the state cannot simply rest on its laurels. The innovation game is changing, and, in response, the state’s public and private sector leadership need to change how they invest, how they operate, and how they collaborate. The report, Advancing Innovation in North Carolina, recommends a new innovation framework, and a host of new initiatives, such as a new grant program for university research, a redesign of university technology transfer programs, additional investments in innovation-focused workforce development programs, and new funds for the North Carolina New Schools Project, an initiative designed to support innovation in K-12 schools.
