Ewing Kauffman: A Founder's Legacy

Amanda Schnieders

MrK

1916-1993

In the month of September, we remember the birthday of our founder Ewing Marion Kauffman. From humble beginnings, Mr. Kauffman knew the fruits of hard work could change a person's journey through life. He believed the combination of an entrepreneurial ambition and an unconquerable determination could affect the economic welfare of a country—one entrepreneur at a time.

Striking out on his own venture in 1950, Mr. Kauffman created pharmaceutical company Marion Laboratories from nothing. Filling tablets in his basement at night, he used his skill of sales and affection for his employees to turn Marion Labs into a $1 billion company with over 3,400 associates.

Mr. Kauffman's confidence in the necessity of entrepreneurship led to the creation of the Kauffman Foundation in the mid-60's, the world's largest foundation dedication to entrepreneurship. In uniting entrepreneurship and education, Mr. Kauffman wanted his foundation to be innovative—to fundamentally change people's lives. He wanted youths, especially from underprivileged backgrounds, to get a quality education, enabling them to reach their full potential.

Happy Birthday Mr. K!
