The Mind of an Entrepreneur

Mark Marich

How do entrepreneurs think about themselves? A recent study from Australia offers some insights.

"Entrepreneurial Attitudes and Action in New Venture Development" considers the motivations and attitudes of entrepreneurs in explaining their actions both before and after the launch of a new venture. The study found that positive attitudes (e.g., sense of self-efficacy, confidence and commitment) enable entrepreneurs to persist amid the uncertainty and instability of the start-up process. Another interesting finding is that there seems to be a direct association between entrepreneurial attitudes and venture performance, although this finding is not as strong.

This paper sets the ground for further data collection and research of the intersection of psychology and entrepreneurship. It can be found online on the Social Science Research Network or in International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Vol. 10. No. 1, pp. 21-32, 2009.
