In a recent VentureBeat article a writer suggested that although Augmented Reality (AR) may seem like a futuristic concept, in actual fact it will become a realistic part of our daily lives in 2013. Given the focus that this use of mobile technologies is attracting, Mobile Monday Detroit thought the time was right to begin exploring AR and its implications.

AR blurs the line between what’s real and what’s computer-generated by enhancing what we see, hear or feel. A more detailed explanation from those who work with the technology would be: Augmented reality (AR) is a live view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. The technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match, or restaurant ratings & distances on a map on your cell phone. With the help of advanced AR technology the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and increasingly informative.

Overview of Augmented Reality technology and how it will be used – Steve Peterson

On a journey through the past, present and future of AR technology, Steve will talk about the next evolution of AR – 4D – and how it is transforming the way we see, feel, and think about information in the world around us. We will also have a chance to experience live demos of 4D technologies currently being applied in industries ranging from automotive – education – advertising – medical and beyond.

Augmented Reality developer tooling and approaches – Ali Al-Aasm

This introduction level session will help you get started making cross-platform AR apps taking the path of least resistance. It will start with an explanation on what AR is, the different types of AR available and focus on target-based AR platforms. A comparison of the different platforms will be explained with some visuals and pros & cons, as well as the different target options. Finally a quick demo will be shown on how to set up and create a simple cross-platform AR app using Unity3d and integrating the best available AR platform.

Legal issues with Augmented Reality – Brian D. Wassom

What legal issues will ubiquitous mobile AR raise? Some will be similar to those raised by other forms of mobile technology, such as patent trolling and driver distraction. But because AR and its related technology puts content in places its’ never gone before, many of the issues will be unlike anything to which mobile developers are accustomed. These include new copyright and trademark issues, physical injury, privacy concerns, and more.


Steve Petersen, Director of Sales & Business Development, DAQRI

Steve Petersen directs sales and business development efforts for Daqri, helping companies utilize Daqri’s augmented reality technology to engage customers, enhance products, and improve operating efficiencies in fascinating ways that have never been possible. He began his career at digital media start-up Outdoor Hub between 2008-2012, a time in which the company grew rapidly from the seed of an idea to an outright industry leader. A unique blend of sales, marketing, and tech start-up experience assists Steve in translating the business needs and objectives of Daqri’s partners into creative, long-term solutions that deliver a significant and measurable ROI.

Ali-Al-Aasm – CoFounder/Developer, Red Piston

Ali Al-Aasm has over 10 years of experience in technical development of websites, iPhone applications and Windows applications. He began his career working in technical support for eLearning modules and training programs for Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership personnel. Ali then moved to BBDO Windsor to become the development lead on the websites, customer relationship management forms, databases and contest administration for the Chrysler Jeep Dodge brands in Canada. In this role, Alli developed both the technical architecture and content management solutions for the brand websites, as well as dozens of promotional micro-sites and contests, with a focus on security and data integrity.

In his spare time while at BBDO Windsor, Ali started to focus on iPhone application development and released a few. One of his applications – Handyman Sidekick – was featured in Best iPhone Apps – A Guide for Discriminating Downloaders by O’Reilly Press, as well as in the New York Times. With the advent of Fiat’s takeover of Chrysler and the subsequent dismissal of BBDO as Chrysler’s agency, having lost his job he decided to join with two former co-workers to found Red Piston three and one-half years ago. Red Piston since that point has grown from the original 3 founders to 23 people and has moved to larger space four different times in that period. Ali programmed the engine used on Red Piston’s Interactive Books platform (Angry Octopus) and wrote all code on Banzai Blowfish, as well as many other projects for Red Piston ranging from games to news aggregation software for iPhone. Ali graduated from the University of Windsor with a degree in Computer Science.

Brian D. Wassom, Partner/Chair of Social, Mobile & Emerging Media Practice Group, Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP

Brian D. Wassom litigates disputes and counsels clients concerning copyright, trademark, publicity rights and related intellectual property and advertising issues. In particular, Brian focuses his practice on social media and other emerging forms of digital communication. He has several years’ experience assisting media companies in exercising their freedom of the press, obtaining access to information, and defending claims of defamation, invasion of privacy and eavesdropping.

Brian chairs his firm’s Social, Mobile and Emerging Media practice group. He also authors a popular blog on this topic, as well as the online treatises Wassom on Social Media Law and Augmented Legality, which examines the law governing ‘Augmented Reality’ technologies. He is also a highly sought-after public speaker and presents regularly to industry groups, legal education seminars, and conferences across the country on social media, augmented reality, and related topics.
