Build your First Mobile App in Half a Day HTML5 jQuery and PhoneGap

The HTML5 classes

The Mobile HTML5 classes will be offered Wednesday (morning & afternoon) and Thursday morning. It’s perfect for people with a background in web development or with light programming experience.


A laptop: minimum OS requirements are Mac OS X 10.5.8, Windows XP, or any linux that supports JDK6

Basic understanding of HTML & CSS and some programming experience (ideally in JavaScript and jQuery, but not necessarily): it may be useful for you to go through the following Codecademy lessons to brush up before you attend: classes 1–3 of the Web course, classes 1–6 of the JavaScript course and classes 1–5 of the jQuery course.

A working install of PhoneGap/Cordova. For Android, please follow these special instructions. For iOS, Windows Phone and Blackberry, you can follow the standard guide instead.


30 minutes before start: registration + breakfast (morning sessions) or lunch (afternoon sessions)

Hour 1: Intro HTML5 and Mobile Apps. Building your mobile UI with (jQuery Mobile)

Hour 2: Add live data to your app with an API backend (Usergrid)

Hour 3: Add more screens to your app

Hour 4: make your app run natively on devices with PhoneGap

Hour 5: Advanced topics (30 minutes) + 30 minutes of Q&A over lunch (morning sessions) or beers (afternoon sessions)

The Meetup

As given at the Philly JUG, Chicago Ruby, Silicon Valley iOS, LA PhoneGap and Atlanta HTML5 meetup groups! Nima will demonstrate how to quickly build a mobile app (a store locator) using free & open-source technologies for the UI, backend and packaging. We’ll have the app built from scratch and deployed on the device in < 1 hour, with plenty of time for Q&A. Beers, pizza and networking start at 6:30pm, presentation starts promptly at 7.

About the Instructor

These sessions will be led by Nima Vadiee, Developer Advocate for Palo Alto based Apigee. A former Phoenix based software engineer turned Silicon Valley developer & entrepenuer.
