Meet the Facilitators
Lead Workshop Facilitator, Allison Downey
I’ve always been interested in stories and believed in the power of storytelling to shift the dynamic of the room and build community. Stories connect us to one another by revealing the commonalities of human experience – even in the most uniquely specific stories. They break down boundaries between people, whether they be cultural, political, or professional barriers.
I’ve witnessed a room full of disgruntled employees spitefully snicker when a senior administrator misspelled a word, only to do a 180 when the administrator shared the story of his childhood disability that left him with current challenges. He was suddenly humanized and because he’d made himself vulnerable , they wanted to believe him. The power of story. A respected storyteller once told me, “A story is the shortest distance between two people.” I believe her.
With an MFA in Theatre, (now an Associate Professor at WMU) Allison is a natural storyteller who creates scenes on stage sometimes inspired by her travels around five continents. She takes audiences on a journey that spans the gamut of human emotions often making you laugh in mid-cry. She seamlessly weaves together her stories and songs of teenage angst, adventures in motherhood, or traveling debacles into a cohesive performative arc. Songs from her CDs Wind at Your Back and Across the Sea have received numerous awards and international and satellite radio Airplay. Her music can be found on iTunes and at her website:
After almost a year researching, teaching and performing in New York City’s personal narrative storytelling scene (Liar Show, Standard Issues, People’s Improv Theatre), Allison landed The Moth Mainstage Michigan Tour, performing sold out shows at The Power Center in Ann Arbor and Royce Auditorium in Grand Rapids. She is also a Moth StorySLAM winner. Her story "Maternal Instinct" was mentioned as a favorite last year in a New York Times blog on the science-themed storytelling project Story Collider. Allison has gone on to be a featured performer and presenter for storytelling festivals, conferences (including the National Storytelling Festival), and events and is the creator, host and co-producer for The Living Room, an award-winning radio series for Michigan Public Radio (NPR affiliate) that features theme-based stories and music. She’s also taught storytelling to college students, senior citizens, communities, business executives, and even high school students in the South Bronx, NY. Allison leads workshops, retreats and offers individualized coaching in storytelling and creativity.
